You know you're getting old when...

My first car was a Buick. a 65 Skylark. Wish I had it back. Two guesses who the "stud" is :D

Those 'burns, Larry...

You know you're aging when you have to research your family history to answer the registration questions during your physical.

You know you're getting old when you remember when you used to pump the gas first, then pay for it.

I liked it better when we didn't pump it at all we just sat in the car, roll down the window, and said.... 'fill er up".

Actually that's not true, I'll take pumping it myself and paying at the pump any day over having to go inside and pay or having to deal with somebody else pumping it for me, which still goes on today in New Jersey.... When the pay at the pump first came out..... Those were the only pumps I bought gas at from then on. Too convenient.

And then you had the gas stations that offered a full service and a self service lane.
I forget if it was cheaper but that was the early 70's.

And you could ask him to check your oil, check your tire pressure, etc. Before we went on a big trip out of town even 100 mi....my parents would always take my mom's car to the fillin' station and get it serviced.

Yeah, back then we called them fillin' stations... Not gas stations. And we went there in our station wagon, or Rambler. Every now and then a vehicle will get out of sorts and backfire. My dad had a Chevy truck that caught on fire at a gas station one time when it backfired out the carburetor.

Who else remembers when your floor boards actually rusted out on your car that was only a couple of years old and you could see the road under your feet? Or what total pieces of crap the cars were in the early 70s..... I remember my dad had a truck that the passenger door was tied to the steering column to keep it shut..... This truck was only a couple of years old. I was riding in the passenger seat and actually fell out at a stoplight. We were on our way to the police station to get my mom out of jail but that's a different story. She had a minor fender bender with some woman and that woman smarted off to her...... My mom didn't take none of that. All 5'-2"...100 lb of her opened a can of whoop *** on that woman.... So my mom got thrown in the clink.

Anyone from Chicago remembers the commercial for the wrecking yard where the guy opens the door on a 70-something Chevy and it fall off. Well I had a 66 Corvair Monza I bought for $150. Had it about 2 years one day I parked went to get out and the driver's door fell off into the street. I roped it on and never opened it. Guy I worked with wanted the car, asked me how much. I said $200, he offered me $175 and he took it :D

Bought a '64 Buick Skylark Sport for transportation while homeported in Long Beach (Navy). It was white with black interior. Had the aluminum 300 with the 4 bbl Rochester. Loved that car. Had the heads off a couple of times due to leaks between the cylinders and cooling channels. Bought a used Pontiac 389 to replace the Buick 300. Had it stored, in pieces, in the Buick's trunk. Claimed I had the only 2 engine'd car on base... ;)

Victory auto wreckers.
That's the one. And exactly what happened to my Corvair. Hell, a little rope and she was good as new :D
Re, the engine in my Skylark. It came VERY close to being fitted with a high compression 500 cu in Caddy V8. My boss at the time I worked at Cadillac measured the engine bay. Figured it would fit but would have to turn the caster adj bolts the other way. He figured he could "warranty" an engine replacement on a 70 Eldo (last of TRUE Cadillac IMO) back in the day that thing was a beast. 500 cu in 500 lb ft torque at like 2000 rpm 375 HP. What a sleeper it would have been LOL

My dad had a 64(?) Chevy Greenbriar van that he had converted to a really cool camper.I remember dropping gum out the floorboard rust holes! We had a million miles of fun in that thing! Double bed settee in back that folded down (over the engine compartment) my Brother and I were still pretty young so, we had sleeping bags on the bench seats. Dad got a 5x9 sheet of ply wood and mounted it on roof racks and we could set a pup tent on top when there were more “youngsters” that could climb up and down from that. Great memories! The various configurations of tables he had designed was impressive too! The smell of Spam and Coleman fuel in the morning with coffee and eggs! I’m misting up a little missing Dad!

I got caught with the age thing about 10 days ago. Misstepped and badly sprained my ankle. Iced it right away and all seemed OK until 5 days later when the swelling really started and wouldn't stop. Thankfully I have an ankle aircast (me and Mahomes!). Wearing the boot for 3 days is helping, but still no fun. Cane helps too -- but talk about knowing you're getting old!
