First Cook, Dog Food Steaks on the New Jumbo Joe

Picked up this like new JJ on CL for a song. Loved the SJ but needed a little more room.
First cook a couple of taters and a couple of dog food strip steaks.
Decided to do a Maui Marinade we’ve used in the past for the steaks which is excellent.
Did a reverse sear on the steaks
Barb made another peach caprese salad which is also excellent, along with a couple of generic bakers.
Got to say I’m impressed with the JJ just the perfect size for a diner like we did. One small chimney did it all.
The meal was very good, steaks came out perfect.

Have a great week everyone.

If that JJ wasn't BRAND new you sure could have fooled me. My JJ is probably my most used grill in my arsenal. I bought the table that was made for it and they go with me whenever I'm traveling. Very delicious looking steaks and plate Rich.

That's a great looking meal. The salad is a surprise but must have been excellent.

I have to ask... why "dog food steak" ? Is that an AZ thing ? :)

The steaks look superb. & so does the salad.

Congrats on the JJ, I'm sure you will use it a lot. I have one and a daisy wheel 18.5 kettle.
Need to downsize a bit & can't decide which one goes. I like them both.

No not an AZ thing. When Barb and I were dating there was a large grocery store across from my apartment. We used to walk over to it and get something to grill on my go anywhere grill on the weekends. I would as check the marked down section of the meat department, I jokingly told Barb that that was the dog food section. Well 34 years later we both use that term for the marked down meats we buy and the two we grilled on the JJ were "dog food steaks".

Great way to break in the new to you grill. Looks to me like the steaks came out perfect. Steak and bakers are one of our faves. Classic grilled greatness!

Nicely done Rich. I need to find me a JJ. I picked up a very nice SJS for $5 the other day, just couldn't pass it up. Now I have two of them.
BTW, I found a box to ship that piece in, I'll PM you tomorrow.

I might have to try that term out one day ! A fine inaugural cook on the JJ.

I'm a big fan of the Jumbo Joe. I got mine a year or so ago at a year end sale from Target for $30.00. It has turned out to be sized perfectly to maximize the heat from a load of charcoal. Excellent searing potential and also big enough to do REAL indirect grilling of all kinds. Mine has a permanent home here, for sure!

Keep on smokin',

Oh man, I'd forgotten about peach Caprese salad. If you were close enough I'd buy you a tasty adult beverage for reminding me of how good that is while we're in season to do it with fresh picked stuff!

I was thinking the same thing. Great looking steaks Rich. Love the "dog food steaks" story.

My folks used to shop for bread at the "Used Bread Store" where the bakery used to sell the just past date. I like the dog food moniker, I will be stealing that! I picked a couple of "thrift meat" pork tenderloins the other day, they were excellent!
