Thanksgiving in July with the Kettle Gasser

Rich Dahl

R.I.P. 7/21/2024
Did this a few days ago but couldn’t get on the forum to post it.
My ISP had a problem with their DNS and it couldn’t ID the forum site.

I have to say the Kettle Gasser is the best indirect cooker I’ve ever seen. Why Weber doesn’t sell it in the USA is beyond me. Granted you can only cook indirect but it does such a great job it would be worth it.
I mostly use it to cook whole chickens.

This time I had an almost 16 pound turkey that had be lurking in the freezer since Christmas, so I gave it a try.

45 minutes on high and 75 minutes on low. 2 hours total cook time and a perfect bird.
This has to be the best turkey I’ve ever had and I’m a turkey junkie.

Super moist and tender just unbelievable, the skin was crisp and tasty.

Made some dressing and a yam with a few cranberry’s as sides

Thanksgiving in July on a rainy monsoon day. Love it!

Have a great week.

Rich, could you share a shot of the works of your gasser kettle burner design? I really do not see any issue with a dedicated indirect piece of equipment. But, I'm not far behind you in turkey junkie affinity!

Great cook, Rich! I'm a big believer that Thanksgiving should be a meal that we eat more than once a year! :)

There is nothing more beautiful than a Turkey on the BBQ!

Excellent cook Rich. Most envious of your gasser kettle

Great looking cook Rich. I like the way you flaunt the grill which is basically unobtainable to the rest of us.:p

I am not normally a big fan of Turkey. However, this would be an exception!:o NICE job!

I would think it might be feasible to find a used Kettle and just install a gas burner. It would be helpful, if you could show a photo of the burner on your very rare gasser (hint! Hint!).

Keep on smokin',

Dale, I keep bugging him about the picture too

Okay guys was waiting for the rain to stop so I could take some pictures, it’s still raining so I took a picture of the box it came in. The picture shows it better anyways.
This is the picture I sent to the rude lady at Weber who in no uncertain terms told me that this conversion kit did not exist because Weber is against any and all modifications.
As far as I know it is only available in Australia, It was a gift from a forum member that I helped get some parts shipped over to him he couldn’t get there.

Rich;
That picture tells it all! You might have even taught the rude person at Weber a thing or two!

thanks for sharing the photo...

Maybe she had a bad day, I got the same thing from one guy there too about adding an ash catcher on my 18.5! I can imagine just how many times in a day the poor guys on the phones must have to answer the same frustrating questions every blue eyed day!
All that said,
What a cool gizmo! If you only use it for turkeys and chickens once in a while with the real estate to store the equipment, I don't see any reason not to dedicate a grill to one set up!

Robert,
I still don't know why this thing works so well, it's like rotisserie taken to another level. If I put the chicken/turkey in a pan and cover it no clean up at all except the pan. Going to try a beef or pork roast next.

Is there an aftermarket supplier that makes those devices for kettle grills in the USA?

If not, looks like someone should take the dive and produce one, or either make it yourself.

I want one!
I can get another 22 and make a dedicated bird spinner! Does the gas line just go through the bottom vent and attach to the foreleg? I love the ease of cleanup aspect with it! Brisbane, here I come!
I wonder if they are available any of the rest of the U.K.?
Tony?

Yes the tube on the bottom shown in the picture goes through a vent hole and plugs onto the control valve on the leg. Google Weber 8506 and you can get more information about it.
Installation takes about 10 minuets, no modifications are made to the kettle. If you want to run charcoal again or for just for one cook you just pull out the unit inside the kettle and you're ready. About 30 seconds to do that.
