Those are some true words there.

For a variety of reasons, we've ended up with SureFlap individual feeders. These gizmos have a covered food bowl, and it even seals well enough to keep wet cat food for several hours (and not stink up the place.) They read the RFID chip that each of our critters have, and only open for the right one. They do a pretty fair job of making sure each animal gets what it's supposed to.
