Shopping and Social Distancing

With all the recent hubbub in the news about meat, we went to Harris Teeter, Thursday, and the meat case looked pretty good for the most part, although the chicken and pork stock had been picked over. I've been hearing stories about first-quality seafood products making its way to the grocery stores of late, and I found some peeled east coast shrimp for 6.99 per pound. :) We fixed it Maryland style in a colander over boiling water and vinegar and sprinkled (the shrimp) with Old Bay seasoning. Sure was good.

I've seen some posts on twitter from Daniel Vaughn talking about BBQ joints having trouble sourcing brisket and the cost skyrocketing. So far we've been well supplied here.

Our local Jewel ( Albertsons) has started the " wear masks " policy. One way aisles and wiping down carts.

Edit: So that just went statewide today here in Illinois.
I have no problem with it, and I hope everyone else doesn't.

Honestly Tim I hate it. It's like putting a condom on after your girlfriend is pregnant. It's honestly IMO a placebo effect.

This seems like a shiny red apple just waiting to be picked and commented on, but I'm going to pass. :D

Our County of Santa Clara does not have a mask requirement but says they are "strongly urging all individuals to wear face coverings when out of their homes to perform essential activities." That said, many supermarkets in the area are requiring masks for entry. I did my shopping this morning at Lundardi's, a good quality, small local chain supermarket today. Full meat counter, no shortage of produce, eggs, dairy, etc. King Arthur Flour was available 1 bag per customer. Plenty of rice. No yeast. No spaghetti, but plenty of other pasta options. Did not check on paper products. I paid through the nose, but it was my most enjoyable shopping experience in the last 6 weeks. (y)

We live on the CT/MA state line but live in MA, shop in either or. The local CT Honda dealer has a good price on a car we've been looking at so on Wednesday we called and bought it. Stopped in to sign the papers, everyone in masks and gloves so things went along just fine.

To go to the RMV in MA one needs to make an appt, which we did, for this am. When we got there, an hour drive from home, the check in person told us we couldn't come in, we need to quarantine for 14 days as we drove to CT to get the car.

Other then the grocery store, and now the car dealer, we've been sitting around the house for 7 weeks. And a couple trips to HD for paint.

Welcome to the world of the DMV, RMV, or Registry depending on which state you reside! When we lived in RI, we bought a car in MA and had problems getting it registered in RI. When we moved to NV from RI, we had to turn in the RI plates here and they would forward them back to RI. Never happened. We had a 3 month hassle with RI that we didn't reside there anymore. We bought a car from a dealer in MO and had it delivered to NV. Had to have an emission test in MO before it could be accepted by the transporter. Of course NV required a smog check here to get it registered 8 days after the first one.

As for masks, I wear one once out of the car, mandatory in NV. Even during senior hours it is amazing how many have masks of no value providing their neck with protection from sunburn. The checkout clerks deserve better protection from inconsiderate customers who don't wear them correctly.

Barb being a cashier at Safeway gets to experience the good, bad and the ugly of the peoples response to the mask requirements.
Most are compliant and just do what's required. Others piss and moan about the fact that it is required. Some just flat refuse to comply with it and also refuse to comply with the social distancing and crab and complain like it's Barbs fault that they couldn't get some items that the store didn't have.
I know I couldn't put up with what Barb does some of those old grumpy idiots would be picking their teeth out of the toilet the next day if they got in my face like they do with Barb.
And that's why I don't ever want to have a customer facing job ever again. As a matter of fact I don't ever want to have a job again!
End of rant.

Seems like it's that way everywhere. Most comply with wearing masks in public/social distancing measures, but some don't.

What blows me away is that the people who are not complying are often older folks who you think WOULD be complying for that very reason.

Sometimes it's the stores. If a store isn't taking social distancing measures very seriously, then the employees/customers aren't going to, either.

Case in point..

Yesterday I went to the Ace Hardware store here in town to get a few items.

After going inside, if you didn't know better, you'd swear that the whole coronavirus thing must not have ever happened. There was just one little notice posted near the checkout aisles saying that they recommend staying 6 feet apart and that was it. No partitions, or plexiglass screens at the cash registers, etc. None of the employees were wearing masks. And they weren't taking social distancing seriously. Neither were most of the customers. I wore a mask and I saw one other customer wearing one and that was it.

Compare that to the Rite-Aid store next door. They had the measures in place, 6 foot partitions, etc. I went there to pick up a couple prescriptions and the employees were wearing masks and they the plexiglass screens in front as well as plenty of hand sanitizer for customers to use. Most of the customers were wearing masks also.

I guess it depends on the store.:(
The Ace by my Mom's in Palos Park was pretty strict. Doors were locked as they only let 6 customers inside at a time. Employees monitoring the lanes and reminding us to stay within the 6' lines. They did have the partitions in place and had us hold the items while they scanned them. If you wanted a bag you bagged it your self and you only came in one way and exited another way.

Rich, my wife works in the local Ace here, and experiences the same things as Barb does. Not all the snowbirds have left left yet, mainly I hear due to having to self-quarantine where they return to. I think the triple digit heat that has now arrived will finally flush them all out-at least my wife hopes! Some of them can be the most grumpy and arrogant people ever. I'm with you too, could never have a job facing the public!
Dan-when we moved out here, never had an issue with returning plates, just notified agent and got a a plate receipt-in fact mine are still in the garage. RI can be a bit quirky as my son readily admits. Pretty smooth getting my car smoked and register here in Az.

Bob:
As a former RI native for 57 years before heading west, RI Registry is more than a little quirky! I have to admit Nevada has a great online system for doing most everything. I hope your wife stays safe from the cranky customers! Definitely not needed in times like these.

Bob,
Yeah, coming from California with all their screwy DMV rules it's a lot easier here in AZ when it comes to getting vehicles registered. I believe that only a couple of counties have smog check requirements. Here in Yavapai we don't have to get our cars smog checked. Which for me is probably a good thing. Our home depot express/dog hauler second car is a 2002 Toyota 4runner with well over 200K on it. Although everything works perfectly and it doesn't leak anything or use any oil I don't know if it would pass a smog test.

No mandatory mask requirements here yet, although Food Lion is getting picky about which doors to enter and exit with. A few customers get hollered at for going the wrong way. Ingle's lets the chips fall where they may, but their stores are so big, it's easy to be alone.

I saw an article where they tried to enforce masks in OKC, the people threatened violence against the store workers, and they just dropped the mask requirement.

Costco is now limiting the amount of meat that you can buy. The limit is 2 packs per customer. Unclear if this is 2 packs total or 2 packs of beef, 2 packs of chicken, etc.

If anyone is going to Costco soon, could you give an update on this?

The reason they're doing this is to prevent panic buying/hoarding.
