Korean dinner

My better half had some friends over, and promised to make them an authentic Korean dinner. Of course, I was in charge of grilling the short ribs (kalbi).

Grill shot. I cook them with indirect heat for awhile, to let some of the sugary marinade run off/seep into the meat. Then I give it a quick sear to finish:

And on my plate it goes. Clockwise, starting with the meat: kalbi, japchae, rice with marinated bean sprouts, kimchi, and marinated broccoli. Not pictured: some awesome homemade mandu (dumplings/pot stickers).

Yum. I usually just cook Korean style short ribs between direct/indirect so it doesn't get burned directly over the fire. They are too thin to do reverse sear. But then we usually marinade overnight so the marinade is well soaked in the meat.

Sean, that is one awesome meal you did. Those pics are great and the plated dish outstanding, I do wish we could have seen the pot stickers your wife made. Maybe another time you could get her to share them with us.

Sean perfect Korean meal,i love everything on the plate you and your wife did very well great plate shot makes me want to pull out the Kalbi and Kimchi and start cooking.

Looks very tasty Sean. Would you be able to share your marinade recipe?

It's a really simple marinade:

1 cup soy sauce
3 tablespoons sugar (or honey)
2 tablespoons sesame oil
Garlic, green onion to taste

Optional:
Ginger
Asian pear puree

We use ginger, but not the Asian pear puree (would rather eat them than put them in a sauce. :) )

Fantastic post, Sean. I definitely do love me some Korean cuisine. Kalbi, japchae, mandu, the various types of banchan...all great stuff. Awesome job grilling the kalbi.
