Ok , you may or may not remember that my buddy made me a chicken hanger for my WSM ,and that I've been threatening to cook a chicken on it . .... I've been DYING to try it out and the local market obliged by having a good sale on whole chickens. SO!

skipping over all the blah blah...10 lb chicken rubbed with olive oil and dusted with 'kickin chicken'
the rack sits right over the platter and once the hooks are inserted and set (kinda like fish hooks) the fire is ready and the bird is ready to hang.

the first thing I learned (and isn't learning what life is all about?) is that my meat hooks are a bit too long. They let the chicken juuuuust rest on the grill below ....which is ok , but it's a chicken hanger dag nabbit, and I want the chicken to hang! (Did I mention it's a really big chicken? ) I think I will recut and bend those hangers and take a few inches off em.

birds been on a couple hours now. It's got a nice color on it and I've got the temp probe in.
You know , no matter how you place the chicken on the WSM , it always comes out great. Beer can style , spatchcock , loaf pan , you name it. Chicken on the grill is just good!
Hopefully I can remember to take a few more pix when we cut into this , but the upshot is , the hanger works pretty well.

Great color on that bird Frank. It may not make a difference but would hanging it breast down help the juices to moisten the breast?

Love the color on that bird. I have the Weber adjustable rack and have been planning on hanging a chicken. Hope mine comes out as well as yours Frank.

Your bird looks good Frank...I ran into the same long hook problem so I just trussed it and hung the bird with a short piece of butcher twine...Almost need to double stack Wsms...humm I might try that!

I considered that but I was afraid that the hooks might pull thru if I put them at the other end....the bones seem less substantial in that area....the hind end I mean.

Looks super Frank!
Are you sure this wasn't a small turkey mislabeled as a chicken?

jeeze , you might be right , Bob ! :D

Nice bird, great color. Might have to look into a rack.

I keep calling it a chicken hanger but I think sausage and ribs will hang on it too. my buddy used heavy guage metal to make it but I think its overkill. you could hang a small cow on this thing. hmmmmmm....:p

Frank, did you play the theme song during the cook to make it official? Oh, and did the pop up chicken button match your thermometer for being done?
Looks great!
