Good idea!!! After I lost my clip I started using a small potato or a small balled up piece of tinfoil to stick the probe through. Now I just stick my probe about 3/4 way into one of the Guru eyelets and it sits just below the grate, away from the food, and not touching the grate.

I did about 4-5 cooks with the water pan w/o any foil. Man what a PIA it was to clean up the mess after I was done. I picked up a 14" clay saucer from Home Depot a few weeks ago and have done 2-3 smokes using it. I foiled it and set it in the water bowl. I will never go back to water again...

Another vote for starter cubes. I have stocked up on enough of them to last me a few years.

Get him a Maverick ET-73 while you are at it . Maybe some guru eyelets too. Rib rack or two. Charcoal chimney. Welders Gloves. Lots of heavy duty foil. You'll be the best son in law in the world.

The 14" I got from Home Depot sits on top of the water bowl of my 18" WSM perfectly. I can imagine the 12'5" would probably sit a lot lower in the bowl. Not sure that'll make any difference when it comes to cooking.

For those using the clay saucer method, are you doing the minion method? I am going to try the clay saucer for my first time this weekend while doing some ribs. I have 5+ smokes under my belt using the water pan and have been able to maintain temps really well. I'm guessing I will want to cut...

I stopped at Home Depot today and picked up a 14" clay saucer. Plan on using it for my next cook since I don't like having to deal with the water pan and cleanup.

I swear by these starter cubes. I picked up 3 boxes at Home Depot a few weeks ago. Before that I just ordered some offline.

I have a kenmore brand rib rack that will hold 4 half racks of baby backs pretty well. But i'm looking for something a little better. Maybe holds more or full racks w/o breaking. What does everyone suggest?
