Winter Meal in Summer

I love ham and beans, but it is one of those things that we don't do in the summer, because it keeps the kitchen hot and the air conditioner working overtime. We had a nice ham a couple weeks ago, and I threw the bone and some fattier chunks in the freezer for a pot of beans. I got to thinking about it, and it got my mind thinking beans, so I decided to dig out my Dutch oven and do them outside.

Dutch oven elevated over coals. Temp held between 250 and 300 for 4 to 5 hours (think they might have been a little better coming off at 4 hours).

After two hours I pulled the bone and meat chunks out, pulled the meat, chopped it up, then chopped up some green pepper, jalapeno, serrano and cayenne peppers and a nice big onion. Put it all in, worked the heat down toward 225 and kept the lid on.

Came out delicious. Very creamy...maybe ever so slightly too creamy...might have been better if they had come off at 4 hours, but the wife wasn't home yet.

Awesome looking pot of beans!!! Its great using the Weber to cook meals instead of the kitchen on those hot summer days

Outstanding cook. I'm a huge fan of bean soup, and I don't know why I never thought to doing it on the grill.
Thanks.

That's some fine looking ham and beans!

We don't fire up the oven this time if year. Everything is cooked outdoors when possible in the cast iron.

Great looking pot 'o beans! Just got my new to me Dutch oven going for my first grill cook of chili. Will be doing a lot more of it!
