Where To Put the Maverick?

I have ordered a Gateway Hanging Rack for my WSM 18.5" "Classic" in order to cook some Ribs via the "hanging" system. My WSM is the old model that I bought new in the year 2008 that does not have a temperature gauge on the lid.

I will be placing the lit charcoal in the bottom charcoal ring and the WSM will be without any grilling racks and water pan, so, where is the best place INSIDE the WSM to attach my Maverick Temperature Gauge Probes short of hanging it through the holes in the top lid or attaching it to the hanging rack??

To be more specific: Where is the best place to attach the Maverick Transmitter Probe to the lit WSM when it does not have the grilling grates installed in order to monitor the temperature inside the WSM?

My thinking is that the only place to attach the probe is to the Hanging Rack??

I would think that's your only solution. Tie a piece of string in a loop around a bar of the rack and let the thermo probe hang from that.

I have the "notch" cut in my WSM's. When using the rack with my 18.5", I just run the lead through the notch and merely hang it from the rack where the meat cooks as far away from the meat as is practical, kind of "centered" with the ribs.

Keep on smokin',

He's not using the weber flat rack. He's using a hanging rack that extends into the dome (the weber flat one having been removed so there's no place to put the probe).

I'd suggest clipping the probe to the rack itself. See my response to your question on that "other" forum for a picture of a clamp that would work.

Top vent, just let it dangle or hang down in one of the holes.
That reads 12 - 15 higher then grate temp.

Sorry, I was thinking about the hanging the unit on the side not where to place the probe! There's got to be a smart way to do it.

Thanx to all that have replied to this thread and your excellent recommendations and comments.

I plan on tracking-down and buying one of those electrical clips here in San Jose, Costa Rica as this is an excellent idea. Again, on this thread you guys gave some other excellent recommendations and options in attaching the Maverick Probe!

As I stated in another thread; I want to make more use of my WSM,so, I would like to try other BBQ'ing Techniques that I have never done. Right now I do much more Grilling than BBQing.
