Shopping and Social Distancing

My Mom's in the hospital after testing positive for covid, so I'm much more aware of my surroundings when and if I go out.
Hoping she beats its a**, Tim. My parents are in their 80s and I touch base with them several times a week, and it always makes me nervous when my mom says they went to the store.

Just got word last night that my sister in law will saying good bye to her right leg above the knee this afternoon nothing to do with covid 19 but, we are all too far away to be of any help to her husband! That’s a new twist on social distancing. Sorry, gallows humor.

Picked up a few things at Save a Lot this morning.
Not crowded, very little chicken and pork, but a fair amount of beef, quite a bit of ground beef which surprised me. Plenty of diet Dr Pepper, so my wife is stocked up. Paper towels but no TP.
Total was $28.xx, gal in front of me had an overflowing cart, a normal situation for me.

Ouch!

From reports I have been reading over the past few weeks, the virus, while dangerous, is not the death sentence many had once thought. Praying for a full recovery.

Paper products are still hard to come by around here, except for Sam's Club, although Sam's can be a hit or a miss at times. The choice ribeyes I bought from there recently were pretty good.

I picked up a twin-pak of pork butts at Food Lion yesterday. I have never seen them packaged that way there before, and the packaging had no brand, or store name, on it either.

Yea, I survived. I did say excuse me and said thank you when they moved.

Up until an hour ago I really didn't know of anyone who had Covid. I saw friend of ours who lives a couple of blocks from us walking through the field at the end of our street.
Him and his wife had always wanted to see New Zealand so they went there on a cruise for their 50th anniversary.
Well the Covid nailed the ship and both him and his wife got Covid. He got a mild case, she got hammered, the sad part is it took them over a month to get back and since then she has been in a hospital in Phoenix on a ventilator for over a month. He told me she is improving and they have her on the lowest oxygen setting and she is starting to be able to breath on her own. Still the doctors say when she is a little more stable she will be sent to a rehab center where she will be for a couple of months.
He hasn't seen her or had any contact with her in over two months.
Kind of makes not being able to buy some pork chops not seem very important anymore.

I've been torn between a pork shoulder or a Prime brisket from Costco for Smoke Day. Decided this morning I was going to splurge and go with the brisket. We made our bi-monthly trip to Costco this morning. They had about a dozen packers all in the 20 lb. range I looked at the price tag.

$4.99/lb. Put it back and will go with the pork shoulder on Smoke Day. Meanwhile, wandered down to the seafood and picked up two beautiful fillets, one Halibut and the other Coho Salmon. Saved around thirty bucks.

Went to our local Fry's (Kroger) this morning at about 8am it's the largest grocery store in the area. It really is huge about the same size as a Walmart but just grocery's. I needed to get out of the house and needed to get some frozen green beans for the pups.
The store seemed well stocked and the traffic inside was light. They have a huge bakery in the store and a deli that's about 80 feet long, all well stocked. Cruised over to the meat department and that looked well stocked also, plenty of beef, chicken and even a good supply of pork.
Speaking of which they had spare ribs for $.99 a pound picked up two racks as I'm down to one rack at home. They are Kroger's brand so I don't what the quality is but at less than $6.00 a rack I'll take the chance.
All in all the store looks just about like it did before the deification hit the rotary ossciliater.

Ran in to Costco this afternoon.... not buying brisket any time soon. It's up to $9.99/lb for prime packer. That's 3 times what I saw 8 weeks ago.

Went to a mom & pop discount store this week, and the owner said that hamburger was so high, they did not order any.

Packages of 6 assorted pork chops were on sale for $2.28/lb at my local Piggly Wiggly today. Personally I would've preferred 6 rib chops, but these'll do.

So I've noticed that people are a lot better about maintaining the 6-foot distance, wearing masks, etc., but do you think they could finally learn put their carts in the corrals in an orderly manner? You know, all the full-size carts on one side and the mini carts on the other so the carts don't wind up backing up out into the traffic lane? No, they can't...I mean, c'mon, it's not rocket science!

Our Meijer has the corrals marked, full size and small size and still folks don't get it right.
I'll give them a at least they tried compared to the lazies who leave the carts sitting around the parking lot.

Went to Save-a-Lot this morning, it's in a rural-ish area.
Two other shoppers, and two employees are all I saw.
Pretty well stocked, didn't need any, but they had plenty of store brand TP and paper towels.
Choice chuck roasts were $8.99/lb., 83/17 ground beef $7.99/ lb., 73/27 $5.99/lb.
Twin pork butt packs $1.49/lb.

When Barb had to go to work she went in early, I followed her so so we could do some shopping, took both cars so I could bring home the stuff we bought.
The store really looks normal now the meat department and produce department are especially full. Had yellow corn for $.01 per ear first six.
Perused the meat dept. 85/15 ground beef $5.99 lb. chuck roast $4.99 lb. pork roast $3.79 lb. Chicken thighs family pack $1.97 lb. and lots of everything.
Had a ten pound package of frozen chicken quarters for $5.40, we bought a pack of those awhile ago and the suckers are monsters about 8-9 in a ten pound package and were quite good. Not all bone like some of them are when they're that big.
The place was crowded about 50% of the people wearing masks.

Living life on the edge, wife and I went to our favorite Italian restaurant for lunch today.
First time dining out in what seems like forever. Not crowded, customers well spaced, had to view the menu online with our phones.
I guess the first nice weather day in many had a lot of people out and about, that and being MD weekend. Target, HD, and grocery store had parking lots nearly full.
The chicken modiga was excellent, as always.
