Yah, it is extremely rare to find a wood 1000 that doesn't require a bunch of grinding or replacing of frame and metal parts and extremely to find one that doesn't absolutely require replacing the wood slats and handles for even a reasonably good rehab.
Yes I think if you were looking at classic cars or trucks you'd be much better off looking for one rust free in Arizona vs Washington

the worst part would be getting the lids packed safely. Obviously, strictly theoretically speaking.

I got a brand new one in 1998. It was very well packed with no possibility of shipping damage unless the box itself was messed up. I still remember laying on my living room floor putting it together. Back then they still came with a propane tank!
I imagine the lid fit upside down into the cookbox? Were the burner tubes pre-installed?
I can't remember how the lid was packed. I am pretty sure the burner tubes were not installed because that would have meant the manifold was already attached to the cook box and I have no recollection of that being the case. Of course, I could be wrong after all these years.

There was 4 black Platinum lid grills available in AZ. One of them sold but still 3 available and all of them not too far from my place.
