BroilMaster P3 Restore

There are only 2 bolts holding the shelf to the fire box. Since the shelves are used to move the grill and I saw one that had ripped holes through the firebox I reinforced mine with some C-Channel I cut up to use as large washers.

Joe, what's the diameter of those bolts and do you think 1.5" fender washers would work ok? I know the c-channel is better...but it's more to support weight on the side burner...like with a stock pot with water, than to push/pull the grill.

Anyone know if universal rotisserie kits like the 200 or so on Amazon fit the P3? Any recommendations? I purchased an OnlyFire gor my Genesis II but returned it and bought the Weber OEM as the mods needed to nake it work weren't worth it.

I had one on my Broilmaster that was put together from generic parts. Here is a picture. I even used a Weber motor.

I guess the only possibly tricky thing is the motor bracket screw hole spacing but I think you suggested a universal one with multiple screw holes in a prior post. I'll check Amazon. Thanks Joe.

Living in western Canada, I had never seen a Broilmaster before. My dad has had the same bbq for over 40 years and I always assumed it was a Broil King (I think he said that once). I checked it one day and it said Broilmaster so I started my deep dive into researching these grills. It was perfect timing as I was looking for a grill for myself. I was shocked to find a P3 two hours away and the guy was asking $50. SS cart is in awesome shape, but the cookbox was absolutely filthy. Don’t think it was ever cleaned. From what I can tell, it’s a mid-90’s model, so you can guess what it looked like inside. Pretty typical story: rusted out CI h-style burner, cracked front thermoset shelf, rusted heat gauge, and just really greasy. I’ve spent the last 7 months cleaning it up, researching how to restore it, sourcing parts, and getting it ready for painting and reassembly. I bought a new 21” SS bow-tie burner, black heat gauge, SS briquette grate, ceramic briquettes, CI cooking grates (no porcelain coating), rotary igniter, knobs, LP gas valve/orifices/regulator hose, and SS hardware. I just had the head sandblasted to clean out the previous “seasoning” and prep the outside for paint. I’ve got the last parts arriving in the next couple of weeks and am looking for the best paint. I’ve come down to either Meeco’s satin black stove paint or Stove Bright BBQ Black paint. Any thoughts or experience either way would be appreciated.

I did my Broilmaster in Stovebright Charcoal. It was a fairly good match for the original color and kind of had metal flakes in it. It was a great color for a grill.

Nice - You have the stainless steel waterfall grates. I really liked those. They cleaned up real well with wire wheel and sand paper. 3 different positions. I did mine in Rustoleum gloss black which I think looked great with the stainless shelves. If you are on FB we have a Broilmaster group if interested.

Thanks for the info! I tried to clean up those SS waterfall grates with steel wool and a putty knife and couldn’t get them looking good enough to want to cook on them. That’s why I bought the CI grates. Maybe I need to try sandpaper as you suggested.

My grill also came with the retractorack completely coated in black burnt-on crud that is rock hard. I soaked it in degreaser and scraped it with a paint scraper and can’t make any progress. I’d love to save this part as it’s expensive to replace. Is this part SS as well? Not sure how hard I can try and get the black crud off without damaging the rack.

Try spraying it with oven cleaner and leaving it in a trash bag overnight...once or three times. Yes, it's stainless steel.

Get yourself some wire wheels that you can put in a drill or angle grinder. They work wonders on that crud but shouldn't damage stainless steel.

My SS grates were in terrible shape. It took some time and a lot of effort. Jay D is right, try the oven cleaner. Then I used a Jaw Horse to hold the grates and an angle grinder with wire wheel. They were then clean but pitted. I used various grits of sand paper starting at like 120 and they eventually looked good but were still somewhat pitted. After a few cooks I just you could barely tell and I figured the pits just hold flavor;-)

OVen cleaner in a bag or an angle grinder with a wire cup wheel or both will clean them up. Then occasional cleaning will keep them in good cooking order.
