BroilMaster P3 Restore

Need more specifics on the Genesis Platinum. THere were several different versions of it.

So, let's say you need a second gas grill (because Reasons.) You have a choice: an assembled but unused Broilmaster U3 (which needs to be converted to LP) for less than $200, or a used Genesis Platinum in good operational condition for about the same money.

Which do you choose and why?

(Any resemblance to any TVWBB member is purely coincidental. And hypothetical. ;) )
I am not sure what the U3 is compared to the P3 but I am assuming they are close. What do you have now? Do you like variety? They are different cookers with the Broilmaster using the ceramic briquets and 3 level cooking. But the platinum has a stainless frame and if the cabinet is in good shape it would also be very nice.

Well, this hypothetical person has a Genesis 3000 and a kettle, and needs a backup primarily to handle side dish cooking while the main grill is busy. They likely won't be cooking the same things at the same time. I (oops, I meant "he"!) know the Broilmasters aren't great rotisserie machines, so that would be left to the Genesis.

BTW, the cabinet of this hypothetical Platinum is in superb (almost new) condition. Zero rust. It is missing the drop-down side tables, however.

Go with the Platinum B 2005. You can use Silver/Gold B tables to replace the missing tables.

The larger Broilmaster ("3") has a very deep box. I haven't measured, but I would think it could do a turkey.

Your "hypothetical" question is not easy to answer. I would be hard pressed to let go of a restorable stainless frame Platinum. But I agree with Joe, too, in that if you already have a Genesis, maybe a different - but also very good - grill would be more fun.

If you search back through this thread, I posted the measurement of my 13 bar Genesis 5 vs the P3 and I believe it there was an inch or less difference. Both had plenty of room for a turkey.

Joe, since you have both, would you comment on the Broilmaster's strengths/weaknesses compared to the Genesis? Is there anything the Broilmaster does better/faster/easier?

I have cooked on a Broilmaster a few times. It can get hotter than a Weber.

I also like their really nice "waterfall" stainless grates. Either these or the lesser cast iron ones can be set at 2 levels on the smaller "4" models and 3 different levels on the larger "3" models. Since you can do one grate at one level and another at a different level, this gives you some versatility for cooking zones.

Finally, if you need to do low and slow bbq on your gas grill, the Broilmaster can be set up with one half of the burner off below your food and the other half on low with a smoker box above it. Then they include a special handle (not attached yet on the picture above) that allows you to keep the hood slightly propped open. You can get nice steady low temperatures, and that setup mimics how a PK charcoal grill works for low and slow.

Joe, I've been trying to figure that out myself. I can find nothing online, except for some of the parts sellers — where it is listed along with the P3 as having some common parts (burner, grates, venturis, etc.) Listed as a "Warm Morning" model; might be some sort of economy or big-box version, because it doesn't appear to have an igniter — the holes look like they have factory plugs in them (see pic)

My decision will probably be made by which is still available next week!

That grill looks like new. Can you post link to ad?

Grant,

RUN, don't wait! Go get that Broilmaster. Broilmaster has passed through several ownerships over the years. Warm Morning was a name that was used by one of them. (I think maybe Locke Stoves, but I don't remember for sure.) Anyway, that one is an amazing time warp. It looks like a similar golden oldie that Bruce restored, but yours is a little later and has the much better arrangement with the burners knobs on top rather than down under the firebox which was a pretty sketchy arrangement - unless you like getting arm hairs singed off . I think you will find it a great compliment to your Weber.
