Birthday Tri Tip

I share a birthday with Mr. Dahl, but due to various other activities, we didn't get around to our "birthday dinner" until tonight. My mom was able to join us, despite her broken arm (which, at 80, is a bit of a hindrance!), so I decided on tri tip since she hasn't seen a piece of beef that hasn't been cooked to death in a while! ;)

Grabbed a couple of choice tri tips at the local market, and seasoned them up with some fairly run of the mill steak seasoning:

Got the 26'er going and settled in around 375/400. Flipped every 10 minutes until they were ready for the sear. Post sear:

...and sliced up on the board:

These turned out really nicely, and were super tender. I rarely see any with a fat cap at all, so I left that alone on these, and I'm glad I did. It was a nice treat to celebrate with my mom and the rest of the family, and everyone left full and happy.

Grill on!!

Mighty fine looking tri tips right there. Beautifully cooked.

fwiw - Vons (Safeway where you live?) and Albertsons sell choice untrimmed tri tip - often on sale for dirt cheap. Was $2.88/lb a while ago (sale price). Add $2/lb to get an idea of what a trimmed one would cost.

Happy Birthday Rich! Gorgeous TT, perfectly cooked and sliced. It's nice you got to spend it with your Mom. Sorry about her arm. Believe me, a broken arm is a bit of hindrance for anyone. Hope she heals up nicely.

Happy belated birthday Rich. That TT looks great and hope your Mom gets healed up quickly. Two guys with the same first name, same birthday on the same forum Hmmmm.

That was a great cook for your birthday Rich. Happy belated Birthday to you and hope your mom is doing better.

Rich, sorry I failed to acknowledge your anniversary of birth! I’m so late this note should go stand in a corner!
The last TT I did was good but I had a “household disaster” and wasted a weeks worth of sandwich delights.
Anyway, your project looks great!
Sorry about your mom’s wing!
Many Happy Returns!

Thanks all, I promise I wasn't fishing for birthday wishes!! :) Mom's tough, so she'll be fine, just a bit slowed down as she uses a walker, which is pretty impossible with one hand! ;)

......the great thing about tri tip leftovers? Steak tacos!! The kids were pretty pleased with those last night. :)
