2nd Chance for a True Weber Classic: A 1998 1st Generation Summit 450

Jon, the ones with the welded in piece don't cover the XOver burners on an old style one. They're all the way in back on the 1st gen Summit and out of harms way. And the fire boxes are different size as well.

I was trying to say that Weber went to the welded ones in the second generation. Although in the back, they are still exposed in the first generation Summit. I am guessing that some people did have premature failures because of steaks, etc. being cooked all the way in the back. I haven’t had that problem yet, but as I said before, replacing crossovers on a 1st gen is a lot cheaper than when those welded flavorizers fail on a 2nd gen.

It's kind of interesting you mention people cooking on the back of the grill because for some reason, whenever I grill, I have a habit of always putting my food towards the back of the grill for some reason. Just habit as I really cannot think of a logical reason for developing this tendency.

I always turned the crossover burners to point towards the front of grill to avoid a direct hit with food and haven’t really had any issues

Anyways, the rear smoker diffuser on Vieluxe looks like it might be directly over the crossovers so I asked Dave to give me a price for bars with and without the crossover shields

It’s being delivered this weekend and I can measure up everything

UPDATE:

I picked up my order of stainless shields for my 1st generation Summit today. I had enough made to do several grills, and the shop saved the file so they can make even more.

These are very nice and certainly thick and heavy enough stainless. They are thick enough gauge that I am rethinking and May just go with inside pieces only.

The shop did a great job of making them match up with the actual front piece:

Our own Moderator, Chris, who also owns a 4-burner 1st generation Summit is in for this order. If others are interested at $25 for the front piece and $10 for the back piece, plus actual shipping, please PM me.

If you own a 2nd or 3rd generation Summit and would like to pursue this for your grills, let me know. The shop technician said that it was much better that I lent him the original front rather than relying on a cardboard cutout. That could make things interesting. Still, shields like this could give a whole new life to a Summit Platinum which has so much going for it other than this porcelain plated firebox front.
Hi
I have a summit s-470 2008 what generation is this grill.

Welcome Bill!

The shields I had made were for a 1998 1st generation Summit. If you are ambitious - and maybe lucky - you could disassemble and take your firebox panels to some sheet metal places near you to see if they could make similar shields for yours. To get the price down, you could do what I did and make a small run of them and offer up the extras for sale here and even on eBay, etc. You are for sure not the only one fighting this issue.

It would be great if we had stainless shields available for generations 1,2 and 3.

Hello all! Found this in my search for repairs on my 1998 summit gas 450. The stainless plates are exactly how I pictured it in my mind. Am I too late or are there someone willing to sell me two front and back stainless plates. Any help would greatly be appreciated! Thanks!
