1990/93 GENESIS 5000 LP Muave Restoration

Well.....this is my 1st time acquiring a coveted GENESIS 5000 LP w/ rare Muave color hood. Per date stamps, hood 93' and cook box 90' I'm lead to believe that this grill is a 90' GEN 5 frame with a replacement (maybe a warranty issue) 93' hood. Either way, I'm humbled to as gotten it for FREE w/ almost PERFECT glass, and just a few age related imperfections. Sadly to say, due to fatigue and cleaning burnout, I accidently dropped the hood and caused a minor chip in top left. Luckily NOT in direct eyes view. Could of been worse? broken glass door? Was able to salvage original slats...cleaned/sanded/repaired/wood filled/exact paint color match from ACE then 2 coats Spar Urethane. Rust treated where needed. ORIGINAL manifold bracket, swing table end brackets, knobs, and catch pan holder. Total investment cost $222. Will definitely be keeping in personal collection. Used only the best SANTANA flavorizer bars and a warming rack and 7mm SS grates from RIVERS EDGE. PRODUCTS

Nice grill and great job but are you sure those are 9mm rod grates? The spacing also looks to be way too far apart.

Yah, those don't look like 9mm grates, but it is sometimes hard to tell from a photo.

Nice to keep the smoker box to keep it stock. It is one thing that many times doesn't last long or is taken out and tossed or lost.

Yep nice job. But in all honesty I would have foregone the flavo bars from Dave and bought the grates from him. Better grates (heavier rods and tighter spacing) are going to be what you "touch" every time you use the grill. They would have been far more worth the investment especially on such a nice piece as this.

This is a beautiful resto. MY all time unicorn Weber grill, I also wouldve went all out on grates, keep this masterpiece a masterpiece as long as possible !

good point....i updated info. yes! only 7mm grates...they look a bit beefier in person....I know NOT as beefy as Dave's 3/8" MONSTERS!! I actually have a set of those on my 86' Gen 1 Brown..

Mark - Really nice job on that grill. I am in the process of restoring the same exact grill down to the color. My serial is about 4000 less than yours, so I am guessing its a little older (wonder how many they made?). Did you remove each piece of wood? If yes how did you keep them ordered so that they went back where they belong to match holes? What exact paint did you find at ACE? I am tossed between some kind of natural finish or going grey like you did. I may try a natural finish and if I don't like it paint it later... Do you use it much, or is it more of a show piece? If you do use it, have you thought about cutting the bottom of the triangles out of the smoke box so you and take it in and out without removing 10 flavor bars? Thanks Joe

It was a "thing" back in the old days. Just like all the stereo stands with glass doors in just about everyones living room back then.

Had one of those in my dorm room. The glass broke moving out, but I think I used the cabinet for some more years to come. Kind of like what people did with those 5000s!

I am so nervous handling those glass doors. I know they are not replaceable.

Joe, Those look like durawood slats to me, not painted grey but, I may be wrong.
Just number them on the end when you take them out. Pencil may smudge out sharpie might bleed through but, that’s the simplest option. Or, you could lay put cardboard or newspaper and put the numbers there.
Just a couple of ideas.
