Sure, but rehabbing it an putting the newer style drip pan on there to start with is OK while locating a suitable replacement for the old style grease pan and drip tray.

That's a shame about the drip tray, but it happens to all of us eventually. I think it's perfectly acceptable to use the other one. You will probably stumble on to another correct one at some point.
Thanks Steve! Yeah I hope I find another one I think that early style is a cool design. I actually put the old one back on just for now while I'm working on it. From the front it looks perfect LOL

What about cutting a thin sheet of aluminum to fit the back side where the holes are and just lay the piece on top of the holes?
That might get you a few years of life on that drip tray.

You could also make a piece for each of the sides and have them welded together. Then you would have an “insert” for the drip tray.

Like I said, it’s not an A quality piece. But would definitely do the job for a while.

You were right. I did find another early Genesis 3. It's near my place in Arizona. Looks like the drip tray is in great condition. There's a picture of the inside of it and the front. From what I can see in the picture I would Gamble that it's in good shape. Too bad it's missing the fuel level indicator. Would be cool to have a spare. Other than that it looks complete. Those early style sideburners are pretty rare. The price is high but my negotiating skills are pretty good. Next time I'm in Arizona if it's still available I'll work on getting this old grill.

Yep, looks to be in nice shape too. I wonder what's going on with the tank scale? It looks like there is one there but isn't the part that's missing welded to the frame on yours?

@Steve Hoch No it's not welded. I can see how it would easily be lost. Some type of metal push pin. Kind of looks like the plastic ones that sometimes held the end of the control panel in place on later models. Or the plastic push pins that held the little metal plate in front of the manifold on the 1000s. I'm guessing these are made out of aluminum.

I'm going to have to pop them out when I do my restoration. Hopefully I can reuse them. Could be some kind of old school rivet or something. I'm not sure

So it's probably riveted on to the back of the frame leg. That makes sense if that is the case. You could always make one if you had to.

This is why I appreciate people like you that post pictures of what they are working on, it's how we all learn. I thought that piece was welded on.
To be honest I hadn't really paid a whole lot of attention to these early Genesis before I got mine. At least a few things on it that are new to me. I'm happy to document and share as much as possible.
