I suspect the dark theme is doing it, no clue about the asterisk.

The asterisk is indicating that you are in "Hard Mode". This means that you have to use the previous clues of letter placement in the next guess. You can't use a word that you know is incorrect for letter placement, just to achieve more clues. Hope that makes sense.
