Weber Genesis 1000 Restore Project

Great find and a fair price. Here and in Phoenix if you can find a genesis 1000 even for clapped out derelicts the prices range from $125-175. So with all the extras you got you did good.

Finally got to the power washing today unfortunately I wasn't able to get all of the crap off. Even with a 2500 psi power washer set to a straight stream wasn't enough to get every little bit off. It's still volumes better than when I found it. The cookbox has a rot hole, but I'm thinking some Quicksteel putty will fix that.

Running out of daylight at this point but the next step will be to start cleaning up the frame and getting ready to paint it along with the cookbox and lid sides.

Those grates are looking a bit thin.
Agreed, some areas are fairly worn. That will be on the wish list to find some cast iron grates

I got the black weber fade on the cookbox, but it cleaned up pretty well concidering. Bruce said it gives my grill character! :)

I would go with stainless rod grates before I would use newer cast iron grates with porcelain coating. It is hard to find the original OEM ones like yours in restorable condition, but you might eventually. There is someone near me right now with a Genesis 1000 with those grates that look good and asking all of $10 for the whole grill! Shipping on a set of those would really set you back. Hopefully you can find a set close enough to pick up if you want to stick with cast iron.

Consider some Stainless steel rod grates unless you just really like Cast Iron.
Always been comfy with CI. SS I know there are advantages. The OEM part# for CI is 7526, which is replaced by #7638. Stainless rod one is #7639.

Cast Iron $89 and Stainless Rod $99. Bit pricey.

I have cast iron on my red top and have been religious oiling them periodically. No thinning on those thankfully.

I agree it will be tough to find original CI grates. These are still usable for now. I'll keep hunting for CI grates I can restore, and add stainless grates on my wish list. Maybe for Christmas or my birthday haha! :p

That being said...anyone got any CI grates they want to sell? No immediate need but putting it out there.

Gary, you can find SS solid rod grates much less expensive than $99.
This is a pretty stout set for $75: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TG3AXOU/?tag=tvwb-20

Or you could go with very serviceable ones for much cheaper: Like under $30: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B083QPHF5N/?tag=tvwb-20

I have a set of CI grates I could sell you, but the dang shipping would be $25 alone.
You are absolutely 💯 right. I think its time I expand my cooking pallete as it be. I got extremely good shape CI on my redtop, I'll flip for stainless on the black top. :)

I found these, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0823BGYRG/?tag=tvwb-20

Looks like these are economically costed. What do you think? Your suggestions look great too. At ~$75 for the sturdy grates may be better off with the oem?

I have had those. They are good in their class. But I think the ones I linked to are cheaper. Either will serve you fine and are pretty much maintenance free. Just scrap them off once in a while. No need to oil them and season them and all that.

Ordered the under $30 set you linked to! Will be here before the snow we are supposed to get this Friday...DOH!

They are very decent - especially for the bargain price:cool:. I think they will do fine for you. And like Bruce said, minimal maintenance, and since you already have a grill with CI you are covered both ways.

We will be interested in your impressions after you get the stainless grates and try them out.

On my 1998 genesis 1000 I bought new it had porcelain coated cast iron grates that lasted about three years. I replaced them around 2002 with solid CI grates that are still on the grill today and look like new. Even my 2009 E320 has the original CI grates. But this comes from a guy who also has 20 CI skillets and Dutch ovens, so I kinda got the drill down on taking care of them.
Agree with Bruce and Jon with the abundance of good quality SS grates at reasonable prices and the ease of maintenance makes that the way to go.

is this set worth the premium over the cheaper grates? I want to replace the Stamped SS grates with SS Rod Grates for my Stainless Platinum, but don't know if I want to spend the money on the RCPlane grates.

I actually think I have a set of CI Grates for this family of grill, is there any distinctive mark that indicates they would be weber OEM?

This grill is coming along, looking good!
