Pork shoulder on the WCS with a little experiment

Sunday we smoked a pork shoulder on the new Weber Charcoal Summit. I wanted to see how much fuel would be used in a experiment I wanted to do. Unfortunately I woke up late and started my cook late.

My pork was done in 8 hours. And I let it ride for 6 more. I shut the vents before I went to bed. Total time smoking and held 250-265 for 14 hours. Pics below are before and when I checked this morning.

I feel this cooker can probably do 24 hours with no issues.

Pork was seasoned with salt and pepper with garlic and onion powder. With a little Montreal seasoning. Used hickory, cherry and apple for flavor.

Sunday morning. Minion method.

Monday Morning

Great experiment. I like how you covered the deflector plate with aluminum foil. I was wondering if you would need to access to refuel, but clearly you don't if you are keeping it below 300 and are cooking for less than 24 hours.

Thanks!

WOW! That barely used any fuel at all. I wonder if the minion method is even needed. Wonder if you could just put a pile of coal and wood in there and start the flame from the burner for 10 minutes and then just turn it off and let it burn from the bottom and controlling the vent.

Awesome looking cook.

Tony you know you keep this up and before you know it there will be a lot of WSC parked in our driveways waiting to assemble. I think this was a great experiment that shows how good this grill is . Weber did a great job.
Thank you.
Kevin.

Next time I'm going to do that.

I believe that long term I will save money on charcoal.

I have to say I'm impressed. With all the grilling and BBQ you two do it looks like you made a great investment. Looking forward to some more cooks on the summit.

I am impressed and if you think about it this just the first version of this grill, as Chris mentioned in another post there gaps in the part numbers to allow other models to be made and inserted into this family.

You are right Tony you will save on charcoal and may be able to do even better cooks ( if that is possible) as it holds temp so well and so long.

Super impressive fuel efficiency. Like everybody else, seeing your posts make me want this thing even more.

Keep em coming;-)

Awesome looking pork.

Great cook and pictures Tony, I think I have seen all your posts with the Summit, but wonder if you have tried running it with some lump charcoal and what the results were with lump?? Keep those cooks and great photos coming---
