One Century, One Road: Route 66, 'The Main Street of America,' turns 100

Hi folks,

Member @Brad Olson brought this article to my attention:

"The Chicago Tribune sent 2 writers on Route 66 to create a series of human interest stories. I was thinking about posting it in the Off Topic subforum, but one of the stops so far (#8) does have a pretty strong political bent so I figured I'd run it by you first. Politics aside, it's been a very good read so far."

There are ten stops in the series, with more to come, I believe. All ten stories are accessed by external links to the Chicago Tribune website. They are behind a paywall, so you may or may not have access to them. Stop #8 involves the "No Kings" protests in an Oklahoma county along Route 66. I am making an exception to our no-politics posting policy because I don't want to deprive anyone from accessing the non-political stories in this series. Please understand that posts about the content of Stop #8 will violate forum rules and will be deleted.

Thanks,
Chris

One of my friends and his wife chose driving Route 66 as their vacation last year.
Lots of interesting stops and places on that road.
I’m not sure how much longer the “Americana” that road offers will last.
Better get your kicks in now 👍.

Wife and I had planned on a trip down the road with the grandchildren this summer but her spinal surgery will keep the two of us at home this year. Not even a ten day stretch at the cottage! No fresh whitefish from Big Stone Point! No onion rings from “The Keyhole”! No Mettwurst from Plaths!
Now, I am depressed! I’ll have the kids bring back a couple of mettwurst.

My wife and I had planned a ride on the 66 a few years ago renting a Dodge Viper to make some of it. At the time there was a rental company you could rent exotics to do that, don’t know if it’s still possible or not, but things got in the way and now doctor visits get in the way and guess I’ll just stick around here and cook 😁.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned so far in the series is that it's not only the 100th birthday of Route 66, but also of the U.S. Numbered Highway System as a whole as well as any of the other highways that date to 1926. I have close connections to US-20 and US-51 and have pointed out the upcoming anniversary to a few related offices and agencies, but so far haven't heard or seen anything regarding recognition. I even suggested it as a possible marketing campaign for the parts store company that employs me. But ultimately 66 will always be the highway that people know.

A 66 GTO would be the way to go.
Mine was a 68 Judge. I would do mine or yours 👍🏻
Coincidentally (or maybe not), Pontiac was also founded in 1926.
