Neighborhood Wing Cookoff

My neighbors hosted a Super Bowl party, and decided to have a wing cookoff as part of the festivities. The host and I were already collaborating on ribs and stuffed peppers, so I figured it couldn't hurt to fire up one of my performers to cook some wings. Of course, in my search for recipes, I came to my favorite BBQ site, and, after much perusal, decided to cook up Larry Wolfe's venerable Sriracha/Orange Marmalade wings, as well as a batch with Clint's Teriyaki/Sriracha sauce.

This was a pretty straight forward wing cook for me......marinated half the wings in Clint's sauce, seasoned the other half with salt about 15 minutes before cooking.

Started up the grill with this setup for indirect:

Wings on, grill settled at about 450. First glaze with the Orange Sriracha sauce:

This is the first time that I've made either of these wing preparations, and, I have to say, I really like them both. The batch with Clint's sauce is in the vein of a classic teriyaki wing, but with a bit of kick from the sriracha. The Orange Marmalade wings start a bit sweet, but the spice and heat comes through later and lingers for a bit. There were five total wing entries, and a three-way tie for first when the ballots were counted. Both of my wings, and the ones prepared by my host's cousin (apricot jam, onion, russian dressing) received the same number of votes. The prize was bragging rights.

Oh, and we were required to name our wings, I went with 'Yaki Bombs and Angry Birds......

Does anyone know who won the game? ;)

Sounds like somebody had a good time :) Nice cook

Thanks again for the recipe, Clint. It was a hit with the crowd that liked their wings a bit less spicy (I left out the insanely hot sauce spec'd out in your original recipe, so the only heat was from the relatively small amount of sriracha....) ;)

I would have liked to been part of that cook off, I love doing wings! Yours look great Rich, did you win the 3 way tie? :)

nothing wrong with that! I try to take it easy when there will be kids etc, I've only had one complaint (a few raised eyebrows but most people like my toned down versions), and it was for my guacamole! That teriyaki is great just plain too... one of my favorites.

Man Rich those wings look delicious and it sounds like everyone will be having a great time.

I guess I won, Chuck, since two of the three winning wings were mine. :) I think if you had been part of that cookoff.....well, I guess I would have been thrilled to taste some of your food, and let the chips fall where they may! :)

I'll be in Scottsdale in the middle of March with my bro, Cliff

Outstanding Rich. You're a lucky guy. Would you give Boch (or Brian if you see him) a message for me. We need another bat in the middle of that line up, preferably an outfielder. Thanks Rich! ;)

Most Excellent wings Rich, congrats on the win. Clint gets a big shout out also...the wing master general.
