Lodge Dutch Oven

I saw a thread here about baking bread in a Dutch oven and it looked awesome! I'm interested in buying a Dutch oven, I see this brand at my local Walmart (in fact they had a four piece set that looked pretty good) I'm wondering if anybody is familiar with this brand? Thanks.

I'm relatively new to cast iron compared to a lot of others here, but I really like lodge. Made in America.

If you're getting into cast iron, read up & watch some videos, & then forget all that stuff - it's really easy: use it, scrub with a nylon bristle brush, I set mine on the stove on med heat for 5 minutes (set a timer), come back, oil, I save the oiled paper towel in a bag after it's cooled to start my chimneys..... good stuff!

Best prices & selection I've seen have been at Amazon.

I know you didn't ask, but I have an 8" skillet, a 10" lodge logic, two 12-inch skillets (my favorites), and a 5 quart Dutch oven

I bought my Lodge DO from Walmart right about this time last year. Seemed to me Walmart lowers the price on their cookware right before US Thanksgiving

I have a couple of skillets that I've never used. The skillets I have are the pre-seasoned skillets. Should I re-season them with flax oil, or just give the factory finish a go?

There's a couple good threads in the Kitchen Equipment & Gadgets forum, here's a Sticky on Cast Iron:

Len posted a good article on the flax seasoning method...

I just use EVOO or avocado oil.

Hi!

I just would like to recommend the 3.2 QUART CAST IRON COMBO COOKER. I use it to bake sourdough bread (Tartine Method) but it is very versatile since it can be used:

- As a dutch oven
- A deep skillet
- A shallow skillet

And since the bottom of the deep skillet, fits into the shallow skillet, you can heat them both in 4 minutes and use then:

- As a pannini press.
- As a cast iron grill press for bacon etc.

I have 3 lodge skillets and one DO. Never had a problem, in fact one of the skillets was my moms, they last for ever

I have 3 Lodge Camp Dutch ovens. Two of them are bread ovens (sides are not as tall). There are great. The 4 quart sees most of the action as there is just two of us. I also have a Harbor Freight 6 qt. camp dutch oven. It's ok. The Lodge stuff is just better by design... things like the length of the legs.

Also have 5 Lodge CI skillets of various sizes, 2 griddles & a 5 qt DO.

All are bullet proof.

I prefer to cook on a day to day basis with the CI cookware. It does such a great job & is EZ to clean.

lodge works great. cruise craigslist or flee markets and you can find the old school good stuff. My old lady does work when it comes to making bread in a dutch. The combo is a great set to start with. down the road, I would suggest getting a few true dutch with legs and handle.

I use it quite a bit

works great for browning chicken thighs

what's nice is, you can throw a mess of greens in it, and the high shoulders will let you cook it down

here's my small cast iron skillet, browning some bacon bits

my larger cast iron skillet frying up some chili cheese peppers

I like the old school cast iron but my Le Cruset cast iron pieces (I have several Le Cruset sauce pots too) get far more use

I second this! I got it on a great sale, thinking I'd use it once in a while, but it's by far my most-used CI cookware. Extremely versatile.

Anybody know where I can get a lodge 4qt dutch oven (not enameled, not camp) in Kansas City MissourI--specifically, Kauffman Stadium ;) ? My daughter is going there shortly and I'd like her to pick one up for me. They are 3-4x the price up here. What is $32 at wally world (if it was in stock) they want $90 (or more) up here.

One Ebay seller wanted $327 for the same pot. But they offered free shipping. It is to laugh.

Bob?
