I will just leave this here

I remember gas being .39 a gallon. That was before I could drive of course. That was probably 1960s
In the 60s in WI many times I was dropping less than $.20 gal when I went to Great Lakes Dragway. In Chicago and surrounding area a few cents more. It was in 1973 (Arab Oil Embargo) it "shot up" to $30 and beyond. I remember thinking we'd all lose our minds if gas hit $.35! And back then I was driving my big Caddy returning MAYBE 6mpg on premium no less. (had to keep that 472 fed). So I was dropping $.40 or more (if I could even get the gas). There were days I could not get to work because I could not find enough gas. They were limiting us to 5 gallons every other day. Well, 5 gal would not even make a dent. Tough times then

I remember pre 9-11 prices in the 1.20 range, and then the gas stations jumped prices because there were HUGE lines for gas, (which they ended up getting the hammer for), then dropping back below $1/gallon most my junior year.

Yes, that is the "lid" he is referencing. The grill has both of its sliding covers. I guess you are supposed to use the "lid" - a slightly modified Go Anywhere top - to hold in heat for something like cheese on top of a cheeseburger. This is due to the open air cooking style. In Australia, they offered a bottom part, too, so you could do other types of cooking while grilling:

This same seller also had an even nicer 6-burner model with a cover, but he sold that fairly quickly.

I did see a different one posted last summer, that was taken inside of a building that looked very nice! Want to say it was around $400 but was marked sold within the first day I saw it.

Do those share burners with the summit?

Oh yeah, I forgot about that one! I am almost certain that one was a scam. This one is totally legit, just a little high priced.

And as Steve already noted, the Flat Top shares a lot in common with the 1st generation Summit. I picked up a somewhat abused one last winter but just am still too overwhelmed to do all the projects I would like, so it has just sat in my shop. 2 years and 2 months to semi-retirement where I hope I can FINALLY do more. Anyway, the one I picked up, in spite of obvious neglect, showed ZERO signs of rust on the firebox front which is the same as my Summit. I attribute this to the open top that vents off heat much, much faster and probably spared the porcelain the more severe expansion and contraction that results in cracks in the porcelain and then Swiss cheese rust holes!

When I picked it up. A guy from New York tried to corner the market on 1st gen Summits and Flat Tops back during COVID. I contacted him and we struck a deal where he would bring this Flat Top to Indianapolis when here for a trade show. I also bought two sets of additional Summit grates and a bunch of control knobs and some other stuff from him.

Well, actually I did mess around some with the sliding covers. I toyed with having them recoated in porcelain by IPE in KC. Jeff there quoted me $200. When you add shipping there and shipping back, it just seemed more than I could justify for a grill I want to COOK on not just look at. So, I tried the Pam trick and was surprised to see a considerable improvement. Since then, I have bought that "Pimp My Grill" metal treatment which seems like it works better without leaving greasy residue that will only come off over time.

I also bought a couple black silicone trivets that will cover most of these two sliding covers. It will be good enough for when I can finally don a Crocodile Dundee hat and do a big steak on the barbie!

Yes basically the innards are exactly a 1st gen Summit 4XX I don't believe they upped the size of the main orifices either, Jon would likely know what the BTU rating is for his, but IIRC the flat top is about 42k BTU just like the Summit. Same grates, flavor bars even fire box IIRC. But, I will lay odds the flat top does not have the same firebox issues as the Summit. I think because the firebox does not see as intense of heat nor the wide range of temps as the closed lid Summits do. Just my theory though
