How does one remove the old black paint on the firebox and endcaps

I must differ in opinion. If they are destined for a keeper grill, they’d need to be just as good or better than what you’d put on a flip grill.

Looks more than adequate, now get some 2000 degree primer and follow the instructions on the can and use a good at least 900 caliper paint. I used the 2000 primer and paint. Turned out fine and holding up just fine.

Claude what brand primer did you use? It looks very smooth? Maybe using primer is a better way to go for I used High Heat Ultra Semi-Gloss Rustoleum on my Platinum, without primer, and it only lasted about 2 years.

If you go through the trouble to completely strip it inside and out, it is going to look like you never touched the inside after a couple months of cooks. IMO, why bother. I don't even fully clean the inside of a grill lid for a personal grill like I would for a rehab/flip grill.

You do this way more than anyone Bruce but if im going thru the trouble to completely refurbish a grill for myself, Im getting it back to brand new condition.

And Danny, I applaud your dedication. It is all a matter of preference. I love all the differing methods and opinions for rehabbing and fixing up these grills. Some people spend $1500 to rehab a grill that they don't ever even plan to cook on. Some people can pick up a $50 Q1200 and have burgers on it 20 minutes after getting it home. Both are quite happy at the end of the day.

Very true Bruce. A freshen up is never a bad thing either. I ended up going the route of 'Well, if Im doing this, I might as well do that too
..' which turned into a brand new looking grill.
