Member Russ Olin has been telling us how much he likes Jealous Devil (made from Quebracho wood) lump charcoal, so I wanted to test similar to see how I like it.
Home Depot sells it branded Fornetto, ship to store took 6 days, cost with tax was $26.17 for 20 lbs.
My concern was the smell while burning, I've read that some folks really it, and some really don't.
To me it does have a bit of an odd smell, not bad, but not the woodsy smell I'm use to.
My test subject was a frozen, unseasoned, Aldi black Angus burger cooked over my mini chimney.
Following pics are of the bag, contents (settled) in the bag, and dumped into a container.
Lighting:
20 minutes later, after the cook:
Frozen puck on:
Flipped:
Paper plated:
Thoughts on the burger. I've eaten worse, in fact I've made worse.
A little dry around the edges, but the rest was fairly juicy.
No funny or odd taste from the charcoal, but no real smoke wood flavor either.
Thoughts on the charcoal.
I like that it burns nice and hot, and that dab was enough to cook my burger.
Due to the price, and lack of smell I'm wanting, I'll probably mix it with my good old Missouri made hardwood lump.
Thanks for viewing my ramblings.
Edit, ChuckO has a Jealous Devil cook posted that I did not link.
