Charred Water Pan

Hello All, I'm new to the forum and new to my WSM. Thanks for all the great stuff on this site!!!

Anyway,
I ran my water pan dry this past weekend and now have a blackened charred mess in the bottom of my water pan. I could probably scrape it of with a knife (too hard for a plastic spatula) but i dont want to scratch the finish. I hope I didn't ruin the water pan Anyone have any suggestions to clean this? I thought of maybe oven cleaner and just making sure I get it all off before using it again. Thanks in advance for input.

I have a suggestion. First of all don't do anything drastic. The rule is start easy, first. Just fill the pan with hot water and Dawn dishwashing liquid. Let it sit overnight and use a plastic scraper to remove the residue. You can always use oven cleaner if you then need to.

Good luck and let us know how it worked out. Believe me, it is NOT a big deal.

Now you know why many of us use foil;).

Keep on smokin',

P.S. Danny, I got a bit interrupted and didn't see your post. RM

This ^^^ is what I would do. I'd scrape anything I could easily first then soak. Maybe repeat a couple times if needed before I'd move to oven cleaner. You could use oven cleaner first and I'm sure it would work, but I prefer to leave that stuff alone. If you don't care about using it - go for it. Put your pan in a plastic bag and spray the pan generously with oven cleaner. The pan is porcelain enamel. You're not going to hurt it with typical cleaning chemicals. Most likely cause of damage would be using a metal scraper

Let it soak in hot soapy water and then use brillo pad to scrub....repeat this once or twice and you should be good.

You could also try the baking soda volcano bit. Make a thick past of baking soda and water (may 1/4 cup baking soda to 1 tablespoon of water), spread it over the crusty stuff and let it sit for a day or so. Then, add about 1/2 cup of white vinegar (be sure to do this in the sink or outside!) The fizzing helps to break down the gunk. Not as effective as oven cleaner, but less dangerous and potentially harmful. I use this method to clean the probes for my thermometers and it works great.

I second this method -- water soak and time does wonders!

That happened to me and I used oven cleaner and a spatula to scrape off. About 90% came off.

I use HD foil to line my pan, but it still gets some gunk in there. I don't worry about trying to keep it spotless.

It has developed a nice crust over the years. Still works fine.

Long soak as others have mentioned and then follow up with plastic putty knife. I actually have used this on my kettle as well and a couple of my scrapers have worn a bit so they are curved and countour better to the bowl, whether it be the water bowl, smoker bottom or kettle.

Also for the bowl after scraping, I use Magic Eraser sometimes. It does not appear to hurt the finish but could not say for sure.
