BroilMaster P3 Restore

Yep I saw lots of those. If you live in the midwest especially Chicago area in the early days they were very common. They were made in Waukegan IL IIRC back then. And it was hard to find a home that did not have one mounted outside the back door along with one of their gas lamps out front

Joe, not sure if your grill is similar to the one I did, but here is a photo of the SS plate in mine, under the burner.

Here is a link to the old FB MP add for the grill. I kind of regret selling for what I did.

Larry, it is strange that I don't see more of them around me. There pop up once in a while, but you would think Wisconsin as a whole would be a hot spot. But, I know back when the one I rehabbed was made (1970's), it was made at the Locke Stove Co in Kansas City, MO.

That CI burner is something on another level! Beautiful grill. I am almost glad I am not around you, as I would be temped to buy all your grills. That looks like the way I was putting it in but it just does not seem to "sit right", kind of like it does not belong. What is the purpose of it? Also I think that Weber has a much better grease management system, as that little hole in the back of the BM seems to be a joke. The 2 grills that had the little catch pan where clean and the little holes were clogged.

I don't think it is possible to restore these BMs and make any money. May even be a loosing proposition with the price of the parts.

If I decide to marry this grill (we haven't even gone on our first dinner yet) would one of these be a good upgrade from the SS Chinese made burners? They are only $30 more. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07G3DBMR7/?tag=tvwb-20

Joe, that SS part is called a Radiation Shield. I guess it deflects heat upward away from the bottom or something. I have a feeling it was put in after the grill was designed and they found there some kind of problem they needed to remedy.

Joe, The stainless metal piece is supposed to help with wind as I understand it.

EDIT: Thank you for the better answer, Bruce!

The cast iron burner is cool and what was used early on, but I understand they are subject to rust also. The stainless OEM ones are made in Taiwan which is a jump up in my book. I just hope there will continue to be a Taiwan:(! I don't know if there are cheaper knockoff ones made in China.

So today I got one of the BMs up and running! Did a 20 minute burn and everything seems ok. Tomorrow I may through a chicken on. I brought my grill with the busted firebox to a BM dealer and he is going to contact the company about a replacement firebox authorization. I am doubtful, but figure it was worth a shot. It was mostly a propane dealer and he had 1 new grill there. He offered to sell it to me for $800. Looks like it had been sitting a while. Not very encouraging.

First cook tonight. Whole chicken cut up (I started late and wanted it done faster), asparagus, eggplant, and corn. My Q320 is starting to get worried. This thing is so versatile with 2 separate burner zones, 3 different grate heights, and folding swing away top rack. I used them all tonight. Except for an eggplant that slipped through the grate and a few burnt ones because I was not watching and it was my first time grilling them, everything came out amazing. The ceramic pyramids did flare up a little from the chicken fat, but it wasn't bad and added some nice char that I like. Next time asparagus goes hot and fast on lower rack and not slower and longer on top rack. They were good but no crunch.

Parents made it down today to see their granddaughter. Delivered the grill.

Quick burn off and the stainless grates are in good shape. Newer ceramic briquettes.

Clearly the bowtie burner is trashed, but a new one should be all I need to get this up and running.

Only other issue is that the firebox wobbles. I think it's a just a loose bolt, I'll check it tomorrow.

Those should be stainless steel cooking grates and will clean up nice and shiny with a wire wheel on an angle grinder.

Those burners are a LOT more expensive than Webers. Your grill is looking good. I just rigged up a rotisserie for mine and it is all set and have a chicken thawing out now. Will cook it up and report back in a few days on how it goes. I will take a picture tomorrow of my grill. Now that I finished all the Webers I have, I started on the BMs last night. Bad news. One of the hinge pins was fused and I cracked it off. The bottom of these fireboxes are not holding up really well either, as I see a bunch of corrosion. I believe the grease management system if you can call it that, is basically for what does not burn off and makes it to the bottom, stays in the bottom. There is no slope or channeling to the rear drip pan. In fact the 2 drip pans I have are in nice clean shape, because grease just never made it there. I was also not able to get a replacement cook box because the ID serial # was gone from all 3 grills so Broilmaster declined to replace any of them.
On the plus side I really like the grill I put together, and used it for tonight's eggplant Parm. Also the carts seem to be great quality SS as all 3 are in excellent shape from what I can tell. The 3 different grate positions are really nice. I also like the 2 separate zones. 20210605_203759.jpg20210605_203804.jpg

Yah, that corrosion in the bottom of the cook box is troubling. Did you break off the lid hinge from the cook box? If so, that is going to be a tough fix.

I am not planning on fixing it. I will trash that firebox. After I clean up the parts I have, I maybe able to put together a grill to sell, and have a leftover lid, cart, Natural Gas burner, 2 good condition CI grate sections, bottom rack and some wooden shelves. I think Larry maybe interested in the cart and shelves. If not I will probably eBay the extras, as I will not have a need for them. I am on the lookout for folding SS front and side shelves as I am not crazy about the fixed plastic ones.

Definitely not interested Jon. I had 2 Broilmasters here at one point but I sold them both. Deck was so crowded I could not walk on it LOL

Hey, you BM guys. I don't know if this is a good deal or not, but might help you out if parts are hard to find.

That one is the best one. The new "updated" one is smaller as BM decided to use the one burner set in it's smaller and larger grills. They don't make that larger bowtie anymore

Aren't these all the same?
