80 Year Old Marathon Running Long Horn Steer Tri Tip

JeffG shared a recipe for a wine marinade tri tip that he posted that we wanted to try. Thank you Jeff for sharing the recipe.

Barb and I were at Wally’s and I spotted a trimmed Tri Tip that was marked down and I thought, perfect for the wine marinade experiment. Used a pinot noir for the wine added garlic, black pepper, olive oil and honey. Marinated for 24 hours.

Grilled on the performer indirect to 127 then a quick sear and covered and let rest for 20 minutes.
Barb made some asparagus with EVOO garlic powder and California seasoned pepper on the gasser along with a couple of small bakers.

Well you win some and then you get one so tuff the knife got dull slicing the first piece
I knew I was in deep Bandini when I thought I’d need my chain saw to slice it!
This was the toughest piece of meat I’ve ever tangled with. The meat had no beef flavor what so ever, which is unheard of with a tri tip.
Oh well, will try again another time. That is when my jaw quits aching.
I think with a little tweaking the recipe should be really good.

The good news is I made some hot dog chili sauce that we had the night before and it was outstanding. Dogs, Chili, diced onions and cheese and some fries….good stuff.

Have a great week

Rich,

Good looking plate...

I'd wager a bet that it was mislabeled. The grain directions are wrong and the seam seems to be missing.

Sure looks like Tri Tip to me... and it looks Great off the grill sliced up too!

you have doggies, Rich?
I mean.... if you not gonna eat what's left....

Dang, Rich, it LOOKS great! I had a similar experience with some beef ribs a little while back.....just no beef flavor. It's a major let down, but nice save with the chili dogs! :)

The shape is there, but I agree with Bob Bass, it looks like the grain is all running in the same direction, unlike a true tri tip.
I also agree with others, looks super good, sorry it wasn't Rich.

Well, it sure looks great Rich. Really sorry for your disappointment. I know the feeling when you put time and effort into a cook and it comes up short. Just keep plugging away. I was impressed with Jeff's cook also and did it last Sunday night. Dogs look delicious!

I'm going to pretend it tasted as good as it looks because you did a fantastic job preparing the meat. Sorry it wasn't to your liking. Great recovery with the chili dogs!

Wondered what the heading for your post was all about, read your post story and then reread your heading and chuckled, that was a great heading!!!

Rich

Guess looks can be deceiving, as your cook looks fantastic. I agree a little tweaking of the Cardiff Crack Tri-Tip recipe needs to be done.
Hope your jaw recovers soon...and a sawzall with a bi-metal blade would have done the job.;)
