2018 Done, 2019 Getting Started

I agree with Jon just does not look right I would for sure take the rod out stick in a end cap and be done. In reality do half these buyers even know it had a drop down table on that side with it plugged or do they care.

I think and guilty had made a comment in another thread did not care for a grill since it had no drop down tables. Larry had made a comment on how few times he had actually used it then I started thinking so in a year and half maybe once on the 1000. On the Silver C I am doing probably because of the burner could actually consider that useful since there is no table to use on that side.

I like it a lot. Nice job.

I am someone who uses the drop down table on my 1000 pretty frequently.

I use my drop down table with wood slats on my Skyline fairly often but more often on my Silver C that is waiting to be replaced by my never-finished ‘05 Platinum. Both of these newer grills have the thermoset tables that you swing up, slide over and lock. As much as I will always greatly love the old wood slat tables for their enduring warm looks and special charm, I have to admit the newer tables are more practical to use and clean, and they seem stronger, too.

Dave,
Not intending to be hijacking this thread, so let me throw in that the more I look at your silver/black color experiment, the more I really like it. It reminds me of the color scheme on my Rec Tec Bull grill that I will someday post about.

Let us know how your idea does with prospective customers.

No worries. Do tell.

I pulled off the shelf bracket and plugged hole with a cap.
Posted it on fbmp this week, and had a lot of interest.
Would have sold the first day, but weather delayed it
until the next. Over 300 looks, 7 replies, but the first
guy showed up the next day with the $150 cash asking
price in hand. No one mentioned the silver look, and I
didn't either. I may do another one like this again, and
see if it fares as well.

Can’t argue with that level of success. Good deal! I think we will all be interested to see what happens if you do decide to do another one like that. My hunch is that many that were interested probably couldn’t tell you what you did in changing the frame color, just that it was a sharp grill. If it works, I say go with it :coolkettle:!

Dave, so the thing is sold or not? $150 seems pretty reasonable IMO. I know you don't take the insides down to bare metal, but that is still a great grill for $150.

Opinions wanted, please.

I originally painted the entire frame, firebox, and endcaps with high temp
silver paint that I picked up for $1 a can on a blowout sale. I hated it, so
I painted half the firebox black as well as the end caps. No, I don't hate it
as much. It is kind of growing on me. The better question is what will a
prospective buyer think.

What do you think of this?

I like it. Yes i also like the factory look but i have become a fan of just building these grill out of various parts and getting a bit creative. I just wonder how scratch resistant the Silver will be on the black powder coating over time.

Yep, the real problem I see is that if there is a scuff or scratch on the silver paint, it is going to be highlighted by the contrast of the black paint underneath. I usually try to color match as close as possible for that reason unless I am painting over already stripped metal. But, that color scheme is really sharp.

Jason, I would not consider rehabbing a normal Genesis grill that took that in parts cost alone. Even new SS Rod grates, SS bars and burners should be under $100 unless you are putting in top of the line parts which I don't suggest for flipping grills.

I don't think it would normally cost that much but the last one I did was a bit special. It got 13 RC bars and the better uniflash grates. That alone was around $170. Plus all the other stuff I bought for it. But like I said, that one was special as it was the Skyline that went to Arun.

I liked the look think it was smart to pull the swing table bar and plug the end of the frame.

Certainly a good idea on the Skyline. I resold my skyline last year for $400, but like you, I used upscale parts since it was a special grill. I got my money out of it though.

Was everything inside salvageable?

I replaced the igniter. Nothing else. With that, the tank, cleaining and paint,
I had about $25 invested in a grill I picked up for free. Done better, done worse.
I'll take it. Virtually impossible to make any $$ in my market if you have to
gut and replace everything.

I would say you did just fine plus you had the opportunity to gauge reaction to your experimental paint idea. It keeps growing on me:cool:!

You win some, you lose some.

I had my eye on an estate sale last week. They had a Platinum C advertised for $300.

Total unicorn for me, as I never personally laid eyes on one in person. I was not about
to pay $300 on Thursday, but it was to drop 25% on Friday and 50% on Saturday. I called
at noon on Saturday and it was still available. The guy I talked with said they would likely
look at any offer after 2:00. So, I show up at 2:30, just to see a guy rolling it out to his truck.
NOOOOOOOO!!! I felt like I had just taken a knee to the twig and berries. Anyway, I
stopped him and talked with him for a minute. He scored it for $100 and it included two tanks.
DOH!! There goes a punch straight to my gut. I asked if I could take a close look at it for
a minute and he was fine with that. It had some rust on the floor as usual, nothing major,
the plastic pieces showed lots of wear, as I dont think it had ever been undercover. The
flavorizers and burners seemed in good shape. The igniter worked, but it had the flimsy stamped
stainless grates. I was disappointed, as I had planned to offer $100. Two tanks were icing on the
cake. After seeing it up close, I was not quite as disappointed, but it would have been nice to have,
and I could easliy fixed it up nice a made a tidy profit. But I picked myself up, dusted off and headed
to pick up another unicorn I had bought over the phone earlier in the week.

A Silver B, with a blue lid. Another grill I have never laid on eyes on a blue in the wild either.
I have a blue lid already thanks to one of our members here ... thanks Bruce, but had never
even seen one advertised here locally. I quickly snapped it up. The grill is crap.
Needs all new innards but the frame is ok. I gave $50 for a grill that I wouldn't have given more
than $20 for with a black lid. I will end up redoing it, but using a different lid, as few new parts
as possible, and trying to make a few bucks. The blue lid will be going in Silver C that I am currently
working on, and will likely come do ok with.

So at this point, I am not real happy having overspent to get the blue and having missed out on
the Platinum. A few miles down the road, we stop at a store and the wife goes into shop.
I pout a little over what could have been, but finally start to search CL and fbmp while she shops.
Low and behold a stainless sidewinder pops up. $1. I click the ad to find a nice e320 that says make offer.
My heart races, as I see I will be the first to respond, as the ad was only 15 minutes old.

I message the guy to find out what he really wants for it. He tells me "FREE, but get it gone TODAY."
You don't have to tell me twice. Luckily we were in the city close by. I had it along with the blue
in the back of my truck within 40 minutes. Frankly, it is one of the nicest sidewinders I have ever had.
Zero rust, all stainless innards that show little wear, rotisserie included and ANOTHER UNICORN -
the optional smoke box. I have never seen one of these with my own eyes before either.

I am still somewhat in shock. I see no reason this shouldn't bring close to $350
with a tank when I am done detailing it.

Like I said ..... win some, lose some.

Great find on the S320. If there is no rust this will be a great flip. And as for the blue lid.... some folks here would give an arm and a leg for it. Lol. They are really rare. I agree they might not sell that well but I personally prefer the colored lids over the SS lids. However most people in my area seem to prefer shiny bling bling SS. So 320 would sell much better.
But not for $350 where I live. Probably $200 to $250 tops.

Dave,

Good things come to them who wait!

The Genesis Platinum was a sad loss, but I think your gain was a close to equal - maybe actually easier to flip. I wanted a Genesis Platinum for myself, but I really don't think that many will appreciate and pay for stainless frame that makes it so special. Especially so, because the always rusty cabinet is such a downer on an otherwise "perfect" Genesis. The S320 still looks "modern" and "big" to average buyers, so with the right treatment and patience I think you will do really well. Can't beat the price:o!
