this redhead popped up on Craigslist and I got it about 30 minutes later. They were moving & couldn't take it so lucky me

it just has the normal grates

The flavorizer bars seem to be in good condition

It's missing 2 knobs (the third one's cracked) and the pivot pin that's closest to the photographer:

Probably need to replace the regulator too - the plastic knob is broken off so I had to take a pair of pliers to loosen it. ((((Yes, it came with a full propane tank))))

I plan on putting minimal $$ into it before taking it to my friends house to replace their flimsy grill. What's the easiest way to clean this stuff, I'd take it in the street with oven cleaner but then my good neighbors might not like me as much....... oven cleaner in my big city garbage can, spray off in the can, then move to the kitchen sink? Let the dog lick it clean?

Amazing how crusty people let them get. It looks like there was one hellacious fire in there. The control knobs appear to have been burned off

she said they'd been using pliers to adjust them . The valves on the manifold seem to be smoother than mine were... I haven't looked at the burners but the piezzo igniter lit it up.

I wonder if I'd like it better than my silver B.

Well Clint that's a nice find. It's a deep box with 13 flavorizer bars. Compared to your silver B with 5. I 've had both at the same time and the deep box doesn't flare up nearly as much as my silver B did and the heat was very even on the deep box. Cooking wise not a lot of difference.

The favorizer bars look okay from what I can see of them and the grates might clean up okay.

If you're going to just use it no need to go down to bar metal on the fire box just get the big chunks out.

Don't use oven cleaner on the grates because of the chemicals on a food surface. Check your grocery store there is an oven type grill spray made for cleaning grills.

Some soap and water and a good exterior bath, use simple green and 0000 steal wool and the red on the lid will look like new. same with the control panel.

I think Larry posted a replacement fitting for the regulator so you could change it out and use the new style tank, save a few bucks there.

Post some pictures when it's done.

Let me know! No biggie, I found them for $5.70 each with another ~$5 shipping, and I bet I can find a pin or suitable bolt @ autozone or Lowes....... could be the ultimate cheap dust-off (not gonna call this a restoration) if I'm lucky.

For the handle & wood slats, should I just sand it and then linseed oil or lacquer?

not gonna order yet, I'll clean it & see the flame pattern / burner condition first.

If I'm going for cheap (and I am ) it might just be a "get your pliers to change the tank" situation Their garage is a 30' walk, and it'll give him another opportunity to b!%#h about his kids losing his tools each time he has to change the tank. (I tell him that's what kids are for)

Hey, something seems off on that grill. It seems like that control panel is a bit small. Shouldn't the frame arms be shorter past the edge of the control panel??? I think the arms should only go about 1/2" or so past the control panel on a 1000.

Also, is there supposed to be a bar going across the middle left to right on the bottom of the frame? That looks more like a Silver A frame.

Something just isn't right about it. Or is it a Genesis 1????

If you look at the end of that regulator, it doesn't have the black Acme plastic fitting. You can buy just the fitting for about $8 online and use your existing regulator...or you could just buy a new regulator for a few bucks more.

It does appear to be a Genesis 1... wow that is super old.

Clint all the newer tanks actually it's been many years now have an OPD valve inside to prevent overflows. If the tank on the Silver B has a triangle knob it is equipped with an OPD. The one on the red head looks like the old style like an air house coupler. Those types are illegal to fill anymore. You can unscrew the old fitting and install one like the Silver B has.

I have an extra pin and clip and washer for your hood. PM with your address and I'll mail it to you.

The fuel gauge is pretty neat - never seen anything like it - it seems to work perfectly & smoothly too. For those who haven't seen it before, that's a fuel gauge on the front of the wheeled leg, & it rises & falls, much more interesting and probably more accurate than the one on my silver b.

I know it looks bad but I'm thinking this must have been stored under an awning or patio.

Yes, I believe that is exactly what he has. A very early Genesis. I think it would be fun to restore with black knobs like the picture shows.

I am not so sure the black plastic knob is missing. THat looks like the old style POL connector where you need to use a wrench to tighten and loosen it. I would just buy a new hose and regulator with the ACME nut. They are less than $10 on amazon.

Quick Clean

I knocked the loose stuff into the bottom pan & emptied it in the trash, then I took the grates into my kitchen sink & scrubbed both sides with a plastic brush & dish soap----then I decided to take it outside. Rolled the grill to the street & went at it with a plastic brush, dish soap, & some 00 (superfine) steel wool, and a brillo pad on what wasn't budging with anything else.

Burners are in good condition:

I've seen worse flavorizer bars - there are rust spots but none are rusted through:

took it into the garage & shut the door (what could possibly go wrong?)

All that's left is replacing that rear pin, finish/protect/or replace the wood, & straighten the frame - it has a slight L/R slant, but no rust on it. Not sure what I'll do about that yet but not too worried.

the valves all seem decent although the manifold seems to be missing a screw that I expect should secure it to the frame (manifold lifts up when moving the knobs from one to the other). I hit them all from the underside, under the shroud that protects the valve stem from dripping water, with WD40 (worked on my silver b), and rotated each of them a couple hundred times - the push to twist & high/off detents all work, and they all have a slight click when they hit/pass low/med/high, which seems to be the shrouds.


edit: I just ordered the 3 knobs, and I'll find a bolt for the hood, thanks for the offers I appreciate it.

I'll update when I figure what to do with the wood, and then again once it sees some action.
