10 dolla holla (new Redhead from Craigslist)

Rich: new style tank? Never heard of that...... Larry?

If I'm going for cheap (and I am :) ) it might just be a "get your pliers to change the tank" situation :) Their garage is a 30' walk, and it'll give him another opportunity to b!%#h about his kids losing his tools each time he has to change the tank. (I tell him that's what kids are for)

The old tanks had either only a quick connect or a POL fitting. But the POL tanks are REALLY REALLY REALLY old. They're both pre-OPV. I don't think there are any in circulation now
As for using Easy Off on the grates, honestly there is no harm. Once you rinse them off well nothing is left. Easy Off simply works by using an alkyd to bind with the carbon and grease and turn it to soap. Yes soap. It than will simply rinse off completely.
As for the gas fitting on this grill it is a POL and is most likely not safe to use any more. First they need a tool to remove or tighten, second the O Ring dries out badly in the presence of gas and starts to leak. Which is why they went to the ACME type fitting. Much safer, no tool needed, and no O ring needed. Very easy to replace BTW simply buy a new ACME nut and install it or a new regulator which given the age of that grill would not be a bad idea anyway. It is an old Genesis 1 and I may actually have the wire basket that went in the front section of the lower frame. I scrapped one out many years ago from my brother in law.
Anyway have fun with it. Nice old grill

There’s a bricktop near me for $40 if it’s still there I might give it a look! I think it might be a silver but, can’t tell from his pictures. I hope it’s sound, I would kind of like to have a gasser on hand and I do want a three burner with roti if it’s still on on it!
Crossing fingers. I feel like I need a small project like cleaning and maybe painting box and endcaps.

this redhead popped up on Craigslist and I got it about 30 minutes later. They were moving & couldn't take it so lucky me

it just has the normal grates

The flavorizer bars seem to be in good condition

It's missing 2 knobs (the third one's cracked) and the pivot pin that's closest to the photographer:

Probably need to replace the regulator too - the plastic knob is broken off so I had to take a pair of pliers to loosen it. ((((Yes, it came with a full propane tank))))

I plan on putting minimal $$ into it before taking it to my friends house to replace their flimsy grill. What's the easiest way to clean this stuff, I'd take it in the street with oven cleaner but then my good neighbors might not like me as much....... oven cleaner in my big city garbage can, spray off in the can, then move to the kitchen sink? Let the dog lick it clean?

Check this one out. I rehabbed this one about 4 years ago. Looks like the same grill. Notice the wire shelf next to the control pane.

I've always liked redheads

Taller lid & deeper box (haven't measured) - my porcelain-enameled cast iron grates fit, I wonder if I'll like the redhead more.

Clint,
Yes, the firebox is deeper since it has to hold two rows of flavorizer bars. Many feel that this type has less flare ups than the newer Silvers with one row. I like this one because it is a very early Genesis- the beginning of the Weber gas revolution!

I'm happy to have found it - I can't believe I got a gen1 for 10 bucks.

The worst thing about my silver B, and it might be due to my usage/habits, is it'll catch fire fairly easily............ can't wait to see if this fixes my problems I have with mine. Before it sounds like I'm knocking my SilverB, the last 2 cookouts I've had at other friends houses (one got a new grill afterwards), I watched their grills catch fire mid/end of the cook.

I was gonna break it in (or test it) with chicken thighs or burgers, but I didn't have time to run into the store and my fridge is full already, so I did some shrimp nachos - seems good so far & it sure is pretty.

there's cajun seasoning on the bottom of these (from Restaurant Depot, I love it)

Tabasco's chipotle on one side, Herdez guac salsa on the other

Do the older deep fireboxes fit onto newer silver frames?

No. My understanding is that there is a small length difference. That makes sense when you consider that the fireboxes are different. You can, however, trade hoods and grates between the older grills and Silvers.

Clint, I’m giving you the raspberries!
Good for you, now you can increase my feelings of inadequacy on a gasser too!
Could not have found a better home.
Many happy calories!

Well, $20 brought it home! The maroon top is really clean, a little TLC will put that right. Deep box, 13 bar, some cleaning is all it needs! The old style heavy grease catch pan is a bit rusty but, solid, the pan is good, bars are rubbish. Grates are not bad, I’ve got a year or two left in them, burners fire clean. A good cleaning and paint should make the box and top look top notch! I’m happier ab It this one than the silver B I spent way more for!

I think you're going to like the way it cooks. I've cooked 3 small meals on mine so far and it heats up fast, and the flareups seem to be less than my silverB.
