Dog Dish Wings

I don't cook wings very often, so I can't bring myself to pay $50 for the Vortex.
Still, I was intrigued by the raves and how good wings looked using one.
So I bought a $3 SS dog dish from Dollar General and cut the bottom out of it with a saber saw.
This is not my original idea by the way.
It's 6" by 7.5" diameter and 3.5" tall.

Fired it up last evening with Kbb and a chunk of hickory, SYD rub on the wings.

I turned the lid 90° every 15 minutes, here after 15 or 30, can't remember.

Nearing the end of a one hour cook I replaced the center grate and did a little direct.

Verdict?
Jo and I agreed they were the best I've made, we even ate them without sauce.
Plenty crispy, tender and moist.
Will I buy the real deal? Probably not, but I might buy a larger dog dish.:)
I'm not a scientist but I don't think the cone shape is the key factor, but a concentrated center ring of heat is what I do think does the trick.

Thanks for the visit!

Clint better watch out, there appears to be a new wingman in town! Those wings are spot on. Like the bowl, that worked out well, 600 degrees is game on

Thanks for reminding us about the dog bowl idea :smilekettle:. Pretty sure that bowl won't last as long as the real deal but for infrequent use, you have the best way to do it.

Terrific looking wings Bob. Can't blame you for making your Vortex. They're pretty spendy. I got mine as a birthday present and have only used it a couple of times. By the way, I couldn't see one of your pic's, the one between the thermometer pic and the wings over direct heat pic.

Great looking wings Bob. I have both the large real deal for my performer and a smaller Walmart SS dog dish for my Jumbo Joe and the both work the same. The SSDD is holding up very well also.
Don't know exactly how they work but they do and I've not made a lot of wings but since getting the vortexs that has changed as they do make the wings much better than any I've ever done before.

are you guys saying I need to try this? It sounds like I need to try......

Clint, don't remember what size grill you have. The size for and 18.5 or Jumbo Joe is the Walmart 60.86 oz size for a 22 you would get the larger one. The 60.86 is the middle of the three sizes they sell.
The middle one was about $3.00.
Got to say it's amazing the difference it makes, give it a try.

Bob, great looking wings!! Instead of the dog dish, I went to Walmart and bought 2stsinless steel mixing bowls. (Total investment I think was about $11.00!) I did just like you, and cut the bottom out of each and now I have (according to the measurements posted on here) both a small and a medium vortex! They have held up perfectly for almost 2 years now, and if they wear out, I think I can stomach the $6 to get a newer model!! I'm sure the original Vortex is a great thing, but just like you, I just couldn't pay that much when I knew I could get the same results for so much le$$.
Again, great job on the wings,
Tim

Your post is awesome, lol. We live in a rural farming area (yet we do not farm) and, so, there is no retail... except for DG 1 mile away. I aways tease family and friends about some remarkable finds there. This Dolltex may be my next bragging rights! What is truly remarkable to me is the web, Weber, and the ingenuity of you guys and gals allow for a plethora of cooking methods and creativity. When I was a kid there was only charcoal (in my world). When I married, gasser's were the new fad and I thought people were poor if I saw them in a checkout counter with a charcoal grill. 14-months ago I found this site, learned I was ignorant, and have used charcoal 90% since.
