Weber Genesis 1000 Restore Project

I might also add that the handle light does get hot, too, and that will cause the plastic to become brittle over time. They are cool, though, but you might just have the ideal light in your hands already.
Brittle yes. Depending on the plastic it can melt at 120C, and some high temp ones can be well over 300C. I would say the 120C is the winner given its the most common plastic. Time will tell. Nothing is built to last these days sadly.

I've measure temps in the 135F range on the handle light, so melting point isn't too much of a concern...but when you see things like this, it makes you wonder what happened?

One per side. I used a cheap single cell holder from Amazon which isn't ideal because my recycled cells had solder tabs so the top is recessed slightly and doesn't make good contact with the holder. I added a blob of solder to build it up, as I remember. I mean, it works ok, but it needs to be better. I was going to buy the holder contacts and print my own holders, maybe see if I could get two cells per side (probably not enough room), but got side-tracked. The 18650 is an easy hack, though, and doesn't require any modification to the handle light if you want to do it. The thing I worry most about are those stupid alkaline batteries leaking all over the inside of the handle light and damaging it...I can put up with shorter battery life to avoid that scenario.

I can take it off the grill and post pictures if you'd like...not elegant, but it works...I don't know how well it will work in cold weather, either. At some point a cheap $4 charger module could be easily added to charge the cells in place, too.

So, I am guessing you are bypassing the original light contacts and basically hard wiring the battery holder direct to the light switch.

No, not at all. I didn't do anything to the light, only fished the wires through the inside opening and put the terminals under the screws.

Oh, I misunderstood. Yes, bypassing, but I think of it more in terms as parallel to, or in combination with.

Got my frame piece back from DrewLok. The flat black frame is the short one for the Weber 900. And the glossy one is the one meant for the Weber Genesis 1000. Exactly an inch longer.

The piece was not very badly rotted at all. Cleaned up the rust. Painted, and is now installed on the grill.

Post office is delayed getting the parts from @LMichaels but I still intend on rebuilding that frame piece as a spare.

In the home stretch now!!!!!!!

Latest update,

I need to clean up the slide piece for the fold out shelf, and either weld or bolt it in.

I cleaned up the tank scale, but not as good as a full restore. Its good enough in my mind. Got rid of the rust. Painted it, soaked the wing nuts and hardware in lubricant to breakup the corrosion, wire brushed, cleaned, and reassembled. The new stickers from @Jon Tofte look great!!! Thanks bud!

99% of the painting is done. The only pieces left are the z panels for the shelves. The wire rack below was pretty rusted. Wire brushing the crap out of it really cleaned it up.

The last task for this project is to do the wood work. Borrowing a friends miter saw to bang out the new pieces this weekend. :)

More to follow!

Cheers!

I just sent some parts to SmokinJoe but I used FedEx. Only a couple $$$ more than USPS but sadly infinitely more reliable

No argument there. I got a bone to pick with Fedex in general. Their upper corporate echelon I've worked with are bunch of whiny babies. UPS on the other hand I've yet to have an issue that couldn't be resolved. For my home business I should look into getting a business account. Yea more expensive than the post office but better in the long run I think.

Yeah I have an account with both UPS and FedEx but I tend to use FedEx more. Nothing bad to say about UPS just that overall for my needs they tend to be just a little more $$$$ But, USPS OTOH has lost, damaged or stolen more of my parcels than I can count. And it nothing to do with current head of government as it's been going on since I started my mixerdox.com business close to 15 years ago
