Valentines Dinner, flowers that won't ever die, and a monster created...

So, when my wife and I first got together I kind of introduced her to food cooked on charcoal. She always just said grilling was grilling. She had a rusted out old cheapo gas grill on her patio. Of course she married me and my merry band of Weber grills.

Now eleven years later we are celebrating Valentine's Day. It's been a rough couple of weeks. My wife works for OPM in the federal government. So, maybe not everyone knows what's happening, but OPM is one of the first agencies to get the DOGE experience. We were told two weeks ago that they are not only having a Reduction in Force, but that OPM itself is getting a 70% cut in it's total workforce. Not the greatest odds for her to keep her job. Even after two weeks, we're still waiting to find out for sure if she still will have a job moving forward. So, as you might imagine, it's been pretty rough.

Now, leading up to Valentine's day my wife dropped the dreaded trap on me... "with everything going on, let's not get each other anything for Valentine's Day." Lol. No way I was falling into THAT trap. First thing I did was finally put together her Ohio State Buckeye 22" Kettle. She was born and raised in Ohio and is a lifelong Buckeyes fan so of course when that kettle was released we had to get her one. We're not going to cook on it, rather she's either going to use it as a planter on the patio for flowers or something else decorative. It was delivered to us in October while we were literally packing for our move from Georgia to Florida so we left it in the box and it sat in our new garage until last night when I put it together for her.

I also decided to get her flowers, but instead of the kind that die in a week I opted for Lego flowers so she could enjoy building them and displaying them permanently.

I also cooked us, and my 81 year old Mom (who lives with us) steak dinner. But, because I was finishing up some work projects later than usual I decided to use the Genesis tonight for the cook.

Filets for me and the wife, sirloin for my Mom because it's strangely her favorite cut.

Baked potatoes, corn on the cob, cajun mushrooms and onions (mushrooms, onions, Tony Chacheres, Louisiana Hot Sauce, butter, olive oil), and asparagus.

I was a little nervous I would get rained on since the clouds moved in and because it's Florida and it can rain at any given time. lol

Filets getting their sear....

I would have shown the sirloin for my Mom, but she likes it BLUE rare and I literally cook her steak for 1 minute per side. It's the way the likes it.

Went just a tad past medium rare on the filets.

Fantastic meal and a great way to cap off a rough week

So, I shared all of that just to tell this story.... middle of the meal, my wife looks over at me and with a stone cold straight face says, "no charcoal tonight?" LOL. That's when I knew I had successfully created a monster. Even though the Genesis meal was fantastic, even Mrs. Grilling is Grilling recognizes that nothing beats cooking over hot coals.

If you've made it this far, thanks for letting me share my story with you and I hope you and yours had a great Valentine's Day as well.

I confess, I didn't read the post, but I looked at pictures and I liked the Kettle, the Pool and the cook, nicely done. Life looks great, congrats on the happy Valentine's Day, the digs and the cook. Very nice

I wish you and your wife the best. Its scary how sudden curveballs come in these times.

Oh, cajun mushrooms and onions goes straight on my" to grill" list. If its just half as good as it sounds, its fantastic.

I remember when I bought my spirit, the owner said people could not tell the difference between a steak from the gas grill and a steak from charcoal. Ever since I got a kettle, I ask myself: HOW!? Just smell the damn thing.

As TonyUK might say…”you’re a sly bloke!” I say “Strong work sir!” I’d say you have gotten to her heart!

Thanks for the story. That's sad to see the cuts are making personal turmoil in people's lives. Food can heal a lot of damage. Looks like you went way beyond and above with that meal and of course kind of sad to see weber fresh out of the box get delegated to being a planter but if that's what makes her happy that's what you do. Wishing you all the best

Dinner looks wonderful - as others have mentioned, it's sort of bite your tongue time - hope things work out -

from the mind is a strange thing department, that one shot of your pool instantly reminded me of a classic cover of an old record:

What part of Florida are you in? Anywhere near where the Cape? You might get a no fly on your Stealth on launch days :)
We're in Lakeland right between Orlando and Tampa. We can see the launches at night, but I don't think we'll be a factor on launch days, stealth or no. Lol
