Stubb's charcoal at Lowes $6 for 14 lb bag

Bob Correll

R.I.P. 3/31/2022
Normal price is $10, good 8/25 through 8/31.
I assume this is a USA wide sale.
Kbb twins most likely will be on sale next week.

Was not in stock at one of my local Fort Worth stores. Tomorrow I will check the other.

IMHO it is good for grilling but for me I would only use KBB for my smoker. It will be on sale sometime next week and a very good price. Stock up because the next sale after next week probably won't be till early next year. Since I am in Los Angeles, I can cook all year so stocking up is important.

I have never used Stubs before. Is it better then Kingsford blue blag?
some people actually hate Kingsford
I on the other hand, Love Kingsford
However, I also love stubbs
I just hate their normal price
So, at six bucks a bag I just bought four
But to answer your question
Is Stubbs better than Kingsford ?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

Thank you Bob Correll for the information on the sale

Thanks Bob, picked up 3 bags yesterday to try since I have never used it before. Must be USA wide, I got mine in the San Fernando Valley.

One thing I've noticed in regards to the Stubbs low ash characteristic....
I use the Weber charcoal baskets a lot.
Whenever I use KBB in them I must clean them out after each cook.
With Stubbs I can go 2 or 3 cooks without addressing ash buildup.
Just a little in place shake maybe.

I've used Stubb's in the past, but it's been awhile.
Interesting about the ash amount though, since I've seen some folks say it leaves a lot, and others say much less than Kbb.
Patio Daddio did a review comparing it to K comp.
His test burn shows Stubb's leaving much more, at least by weight.

Possibly the formula has changed since his 5 year old post?

In a more recent review by The Sweet Home, Stubbs produced the least amount of ash and burned the hottest out of the briquets they reviewed:

Here's a last year's comparison from WKC.
Leftover Dry Ash Content Breakdown (bucket weight subtracted out):
Kingsford Comp: 5.9 oz
Trader Joes: 9.4 oz
Stubbs: 10.1 oz
Kingsford Blue Bag: 10.7 oz
The Kingsford Comp was the clear winner in this regard coming in at almost half that of the competitors. Once again the TJ’s Stubbs, And KBB came out very close on paper.

I have no idea why the results are so different from different testers and users.
If I find the time I'll do one myself soon.
