In my opinion upgrading grates and flavorizer bars doesn't take anything away from a high level back to original restoration. Just adds value and appeal. I'm glad you are keeping it as original as possible. I'm excited for this restoration.I think I have a spare set of new stamped steel porcelain grates I could use, but I plan to either use some stamped SS grates or solid rod SS grates and mod them.
I just don't care much for the porcelain grates even though I am pretty sure that is what Weber used on these grills....In fact, I think the set that came on the grill are originals. I am a bit torn, because I would like to keep it as original as possible, but as I said, I just think SS is superior and more appealing.
I don't think you're wrong either way, but I would probably keep it original especially if you already have the new parts. It's such a unique grill that I don't think a lack of SS grates will hurt the sale of it. Keeping it for myself would necessitate using the SS stamped grates as the next best thing.I think I have a spare set of new stamped steel porcelain grates I could use, but I plan to either use some stamped SS grates or solid rod SS grates and mod them.

If you could get your hands on a three piece set of the summit 9mm grates it would really make that grill special.Points well taken. I have already made a deal with cody for the grate however. That just makes my decision just a bit easier. The only reason I can see for keeping it with the porcelain grates is to preserve the strict authenticity of it. But, I don't think most buyers would be that knowledgeable or even care about an upgrade if they did. If a buyer was concerned about that, I don't think they would mind replacing the grates. So, I will probably just stick with the other two stainless options. However, in 5 months, that could change.
Yes, they fit. I have a set of them on my Jack Daniels grill, came with the remains of a smoker box. You could always cut one grate down to the right size.Would they fit with the steam n chips? I do have some sets of 9mm, but they are full size.
Grillspot.com had them for $159 apiece plus shipping not too long ago. So yeah, not cheap by any stretch. Bruce mentioned he already has a set, so he's good there if he chooses that option. Those summit grates are in my opinion the best grates available and I love mine. I have a few sets but unless you find a used pair they are around $350 a set for one of the few remaining sets available.
If a guy was to cut down the big boy grates, that 4/5 would be the grill to deserve it. I’d just be nervous as hell cutting them, lolWould they fit with the steam n chips? I do have some sets of 9mm, but they are full size.
$159 for one grate right? Half setGrillspot.com had them for $159 apiece plus shipping not too long ago. So yeah, not cheap by any stretch. Bruce mentioned he already has a set, so he's good there if he chooses that option.
I cut a set for my Jr.If a guy was to cut down the big boy grates, that 4/5 would be the grill to deserve it. I’d just be nervous as hell cutting them, lol
That grill would totally justify the cutting as well. What did you use to cut them?I cut a set for my Jr.
