Steam-N-Chips

If he decided to upgrade to SS, he would have to sit and wait for me to cut down a pair of 9mm SS grates. But, yah, that is a possibility, I guess.
Otherwise, I have another nib aftermarket set of stamped steel grates that might be the darker shade to match the smoker box. Problem is, they are under a bunch of heavy SS and CI grate sets that would be tough to uncover....and it is just too cold out to deal with it right now.

When I bought my Genesis a very early narrow slat one, it had the light colored speckly grates. I don't think it was so much an "update" but perhaps just different plants finishing the parts as I'm sure Weber did not fabricate and finish them

Does it say that the smoke box and bracket is porcelain enameled? I would have to think it is?
I do have a new set of the grates like you have as well. The specs are very tiny but make it a lighter gray shade.

Here is a comparison photo. The darker ones are the panel that comes with the smokeNchips. The lighter one is from the full set.

the one on the right is far more speckled than the one I have.

Sure, they are the same as the grate that came with it. Certainly enameled.

As larry said, they are all probably from different lots and some had more or less speckling. It just depended on the time, place and probably how much the worker was drinking on the job that day as to the exact shade they turned out that day.

Well, I finally received the SteamNChips today. It took one crazy ride through the USPS system, but it seems to have arrived in good shape. I assume it is complete.

The steam box looks like the one from a gen 1 summit i have. Is the box porcelain coated? Mine is sat all grimed up somewhere in my storage and have not got around to cleaning it.

The gen 1 Summit did not have the Steam n Chips. It had a stainless steel (quite large) that went under the grates where it actually worked. (to put smoke on the food instead of out the side

Ideally on a gas grill where the venting is in the back, wouldn't it be best if the smoker box was across the front of the grill?
Absolutely. It's the natural aur flow. When I used smoking packets on the Genesis I always put them over the front burner and my "indirects" were done with usually front burner only.

Thanks, its been a while since i have set eyes on the thing. I must clean it up soon, will it only work in the Summit grills?

If you're asking about the big SS one from the gen 1 Summit, yes. But now I think it may be adaptable to the new style Genesis grills. I've never looked at the burner spacing on the new Genesis models as I've never had an interest in them.

@Bruce
@LMichaels
I totally jinxed myself with USPS. I blame both of you 😂
I purchased a vintage Reed Vise from New York 53 lbs shipped USPS to Washington State. It was supposed to be delivered on the 20th. Of course it went to Texas and then Colorado. 9 days ago was the last update. "In transit to next facility, arriving late"
Thanks guys lol

Sorry Josh. Quite honestly it seems any time I receive something via USPS I cringe because it's an extremely rare even it's not lost in space. Fed Ex/UPS? usually here faster than promised and no sending it all over the country.
I only had one issue with FedEx (though more with old Ma Nature). A couple years ago I sold my Moccamaster on FleaBay and someone in Oregon IIRC bought it. Watched the tracking, IIRC to AZ then it stopped. That was during that time back then there was some type of incredible winter storms out west. Eventually it got to her. Not without me biting my nails to the quick. And undamaged as well. One thing nature related over the course of many years, I can understand.

I just had an issue with FedEx. THey were delivering a new keyboard to me from Best Buy. Supposed to be delivered Friday 10:20am to 2:20pm. They have this fun tracking tool that lets you actually see the location of the delivery truck on a map. Well, it didn't get delivered before 2:20, but I could see the truck and it's progress. About 3pm, it drove through my area, literally less than 1/4 mile from my house. If I honked my car horn, he could have heard it. Well, he just kept going making deliveries for the next two hours getting further, then closer then further away. Finally the truck stopped at about 5pm. He did actually deliver it the next day and when he showed up he was actually running from the truck to the house and back. I guess he was pretty behind schedule. LOL
