Restoration Projects. 1992 Genesis 1 and Late '80's Genesis 2

Great work. I love the look of that. When you posted the frame a couple weeks ago,
it gave me an idea or two that I will be trying on an upcoming project.

That's some really cool and high-grade work:D. You have a unique grill combining some of the early classic influences with the modern touches of stainless, inside and out. It will last a life-time. CONGRATS!

Outstanding job. That will be a lifetime unit that you can leave in your will for many generations to come

It's been snowy and cold here lately, so the grill is still in the garage.
I have some stainless for the second frame (dad's grill). It'll get welded this week:

I was bored and had beer, so I started thinking.

Keep those thoughts to yourselves. I have had a thought or two without beer...

What about a grill scraper? I have a couple of Weber spatulas, one made in China and I think the other made in Taiwan. The Chinese one is in worse shape than the Taiwanese even though they both are stamped "Stainless Steel", so I drilled some holes and checked the fit:

Then cut off the end. It seems to fit the grate OK, but I don't think it will clean them as good as a brush. We'll see later.

That is a great idea for a quick clean. I may make one of those if I come across an extra spatula.

I do love that frame!!! I was trying to think of ways to create one without welding. I did find this:

3-Way 90
https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B073X3G3M2/tvwb-20

3-Way 180
https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B073X31ZT8/tvwb-20

2-Way 180
https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B073X2PPRM/tvwb-20

Now if these weren't so expensive that would be awesome. The same vendor (http://www.tophardware.com) selling these on Amazon sells on Ebay. However I did find these:

https://eztube.com/product-category/connectors/3-way-connectors/

Not so pretty but the price is waaay better. I am obsessing on that frame. Probably cheaper to buy the tube and find someone to weld it up. Maybe not... Ideas anyone ???

My 2 cents....I think it'll be easier if you could find an 05 Genesis Platinum frame (Weber 6780001) and go from there. The only draw back is that you won't be able to use the 1000 cookbox on it as it was built for the Silver cookbox. But hey, if you have the resources then why not?

I agree Sam. Those connectors are just too expensive to make it feasible. If you weld or know a welder who would weld up a frame out of stainless, then that would be awesome, but otherwise, finding a Platinum SS frame would be great. Just are not many around. If I did find one, I would probably use it on a personal grill instead of a rehab project.

I agree with Sam Bee. See if you can find a 05/06 Platinum B or C. I got one for $75 a few weeks ago. Used the parts of a Silver C, 1000 and the blue lid of an early Silver B to create my own grill.

They are rare but there is currently another one in my area. But the seller wants to $250 and is not budging on price.

Yup, they are rare but still out there so not sure if they're considered "unicorn" status yet. $250 does sound steep but if the grill is all fixed up and looking nice and the enclosed cabinet is still good then $250 sounds reasonable, especially for a SS frame.

The combo of the stainless frame plus the doors is exactly what I want. That is a sweet rig ! I think I want to build something similar but then get some Rcplanebuyer stainless zbars and then do wood vs. thermoset. Would there be any issues using an older firebox that has the 13 flavorizer bars? I know that they are deeper but would it fit?

According to several members here the older firebox from the Genesis x000 with the 13 flavorizer bars will NOT fit in the B/C frame. It is slightly wider.
I wanted to do something with wood as well but went back to Thermoset because they basically need no care. This is my workhorse grill and it needs to be a low care grill. But I still believe stainless steel frame and wood shelves would look cool.

Yah, the frames on the Silver B/C's is different than the frames on the 1000-5000's. You can swap lids all day long, but the fire boxes are another story.

Time for a small update.

I found another old Genesis that I picked up yesterday. I wanted the wheels, black knobs and the control panel. The wheels and knobs were OK, but sadly the control panel has some damage. I took it apart and installed the wheels on the second frame we got welded up. I already upgraded the assembly by using stainless acorn nuts instead of the jam nuts. I think it dresses it up a bit:

Here's the frame from the old Genesis 2. Notice again that the hole for the igniter is the single round hole. Also, they used the same cross member, rotated 180 degrees to support the left side of the control panel.

The igniter mount to the firebox was different. The porcelain part went through the round hole. I think the smaller hole below was threaded for a screw to hold the gas collector. I remember changing the igniter in my dad's grill a long time ago, and having to remove the screw. I also think that the original igniters only had one wire.

This grill frame did have the fuel gauge, and it is in better shape than the other two. I started work on one, but it needs to be sanded and repainted. I need a flat surface because I plan on putting down some tape and cutting out the letters and lines. I will then paint them and I don't want the paint to bleed under the tape.

On the very old Genesis models there is no gas collector. It's just a long heavy wire coming out of the porcelain and angled to about 3/16" from the burner

I believe that is correct! I remember that now! So, what about the screw? was it to anchor something to hold the porcelain in place?

Here is the control panel. These were held by a single screw that threaded into the square plastic insert in the frame. The igniter button was attached differently too:

I noticed the knobs are different on this one. On Dad's, the pointers are white. These are all black. I already installed them on the Frankengrill.

Found the serial on this one. The label was painted over, and the first part of the serial is illegible. The bottom center is marked "Rev 12/85"
