Picked Up Free Curbside 1st Gen Summit 650

Does anyone or @Jon Tofte know what this orange stuff is and its purpose on the cookbox side panels inside? Can it be replaced with a similar product if I clean it out?

Well I have good news and bad news.

The good news is that I can use the Top Rails from the other Grill.

The bad news is that both grills have a compromised Right Side Aluminum Cookbox Bottom Panel.

I could actually high temp JB Weld the one, because the hole is small, however…the bolts attaching it to the porcelain panel are corroded and heat welded to each other.

I’m working on finessing a way to cut them off.

If anyone has a right side cookbox panel (lol I know it’s almost not possible), let me know!

Those frame tubes look like they are pretty much rusted through, I hope I am wrong though. Right about now I would be resigning myself to throwing most of that grill away.
EDIT: LATE REPLY

These grills are “do it because you love them” rather than being decent flip candidates. I think you might look into getting new tube framing and see if you can find someone to weld in replacement sections. If you decide to throw in the towel, though, please part it out. Almost all 1st generation Summit parts are now completely unavailable.

I can't really tell from your picture how extensive the corrosion is. If the stuff above where the RTV was originally applied is just surface, I would clean it off and go with it. New RTV and maybe a little extra where the bolt holes have widened should keep that from causing any problems. The porcelain metal will prevent anything getting through - at least I think so.

Ok I got the bolts cut, so now I can use this right side panel after I drill out the old bolts (ugh).
Makes me regret selling my drill press.

Here’s the two small holes in this one that I think I could just patch with JB Weld:

I think that will work. I will have to admit those parts took a beating. Just makes it more rewarding to save an amazing grill that Weber will never replicate in the future! :coolkettle:

When I finally got mine (purchased from @LMichaels) finished, my first reaction to using it compared to a regular Genesis was "This feels like a Mercedes!" Don't get me wrong, I LOVE regular classic Genesis grills. These were just very special, almost no holds barred. And they were priced accordingly back in the day. Last I checked, the 4-burner went for $2,400 when it came out, roughly $4,200 today.
