New (to me) 22 found on CL

Hi everyone. New to the forum. I joined to learn how to use my newly acquired 22.5 WSM. Found it on CL in the town my daughter lives, had her pick it up for me, so I still don’t physically have it here. I just couldn’t pass it up for $225 (it does have some battle scars, but nothing that will affect the function). I’ve owned a 22.5 kettle for a few years now and wanted to branch out to some low and slow cooks. I’ll post pics when I get it here and start the cleanup process. I do have one pic of the cooking grate.

This is funny. Looking through the topic titles, I’m seeing LOTS of threads titled the same as this one. Mods, feel free to delete mine.

I don’t know how anybody gets or finds anything on Craigslist. Where I live it’s nothing but ads and scam ads and more ads. Worthless.

On that particular day, there were two 22.5 WSMs listed in the Cincinnati area. One @ $225, the other @ $150. The cheaper one looked like it had been rode hard and put away wet. There is still an 18.5 model for $150 listed.

I’ve been busy online shopping for “upgrades”.

Tony, welcome to TVWBB, and congrats on your new grill. Whatever you paid for it, doesn't matter! You are part of the WSM family, and that thing will rock out some great "Q" for you no matter what. Some good advice above to get a few cooks in with the WSM in its "native" state, so you can really get a feel for what upgrades/add-ons would improve your experience. Don't let that advice keep you from making a list, of course, as I think most of us are that way.

Check back in here if you have questions or need help when you get the grill in your hands and get to cooking! Most importantly, show us what you're cooking, we love to revel in other members great grub!

Bought some cleaning stuff and a gasket kit yesterday. I’ll hold off on anything else until I have a few cooks on it. Got a few things in my Amazon cart…

I think that sounds like a prefect plan. Welcome to the community. My primary cookers are a WSM 14 and a 22 Master Touch Kettle, got both used and I have made up for the saving by buying accessories for both.

Funny story about my 22” kettle. Went to Walmart one day and they had a 22” premium (enclosed ash catcher) on display but none boxed to buy. I was told to wheel the display to the register where, for lack of any other pricing info, I was charged the price for a Smokey Joe (about $100 off real price). The person ringing me out said “you’re getting a heck of a deal.”

I told her to hold that thought as I whipped out my Walmart employee discount card (I’m a Walmart truck driver).

Long story short, I got a $180ish kettle for right at $70.

Before cleaning. I’m not going hog wild cleaning. Cooking grates and inside the door edge for gasket installation will be it for now. The previous owner apparently replaced the charcoal grate with one that’s too big. It doesn’t rest on the leg bolts but above them, so that’s my next purchase.

Also just got my Unknown lid hinge.

I didn’t commemorate the first smoke with pics, it was a mixed success/failure. Did a pork sirloin and brats (both from a local farm). Brats were well received, the sirloin was not.

I’ve got lots to learn.

Went to install the Unknown hinge and it’s going back to Amazon. One side doesn’t lay flat against the smoker when I hold the other side flat to it. (Mounting flange, I mean) I’m not going to rig something up only to have it fail in the near future.

I have a 14 I never use anymore and have owned an 18 and currently have a 22. The 22 for me has been the most stable and easy to keep to temp over long periods of time. They all run well but for me the 22 has been the easiest to use. You got a great CL score!

Just got done emailing Weber about the charcoal grate (the one in it is too big, doesn’t rest on the leg bolts). After providing the serial number, they wanted my address to send me a new grate, free under warranty.

I’m only buying Weber.
