My Genesis 1000 Restoration (Should have found a better Grill)

Someone came up with a certain number of pennies that worked. I think it might have been Dave in KC. Maybe 5 pennies per space?
Of course, that would depend on your actual nominal size of boards.

If that was me, there would be like two hundred recently failed attempts on the table with the slats lol

Lot of nuances here. The side table and flip table was easy. Those boards are flush with the edge of the z bar. On the 3000 lower tables, it's slightly indented like 3/16" so when two assembled tables are butted together, you still have a board gap. The larger lower z bars were actually drilled not accounting for that indent, but it is close enough that you'll still seat the screw into the meat of the board. I think i cut my boards to 1 9/16 after using calipers on some OEM ones. Clamps are your best friend.

I did read about the penny option before embarking on this. That got me going with coins for the side tables, and then just found those nuts for the bottom table. Definitely the most intricate part of any restoration, and the most rewarding.

I tried to contact Dave Santana/RCPlanebuyer before buying my flavor bars on ebay, thru his Craigslist ad. There was someone here on the forum who mentioned you could contact him directly thru craigslist instead of thru Ebay. He never responded.. Not sure if anyone has any other way to contact him.

I wanted Flavor bars, Grates and z bars.. I ended up just buying the flavor bars from him on Ebay and i ordered the Stanbroil SS Grates instead on Amazon, Obviously because of the price. If the Stainbroil dont work out ill just order a set from Dave

ChuckD,
I like the Stanbroil set of Grates I got. I have yet to cook on them though so we will see if my opinion changes after that.

I got a hold of him through CL. Took a while because he didn't my z bars in stock and had to make them. Couple weeks and then his partner sent me an invoice. Pretty easy process. I think he's cranking out product and has help to run the back end.

I have had good communication with him. It could just be your email got lost in one of 30 he gets every day regarding grill parts.

Here is the link again. Just contact him through one of his CL adds and tell him what you are looking for.

Your probably right Bruce.. Im sure he gets a ton of emails..

Couple Photos .. I got some parts from a Great member here today. Tank Gauge, Control Panels ,Wooden Handle and Spacer Bracket for Wood Side Table. TY Jeff MA. I still have More sanding on the Handle but its looking good.

Also, Any Suggestions/Photos of a different type of wood for the underneath and side tables? Having a hard time finding any Cedar.. Of course when im doing a rehab on a grill there is none to be found due to Covid..

Ive seen others here on the Forum use different stuff and ill start looking ..Also what kind of finish. Shellac or some king Of poly? Im not crazy about either of those , thats 4 sure..

One finish that you might want to consider is Spar Urethane. It is designed for marine applications so it is fairly weather resistant.

How many quarters did you use per stack for the spacing? Also, which color stain did you use?
Havent got that far yet Mark. Trying to figure out what type of wood to use, cant find any Cedar.. I wont use coins.. Ill just cut up some spacers once i know what size i need.. From what i quickly measured, it looks to be about 1/4"

I just picked up some cedar 1x2’s from a local
Mill. $5 per 8ft section, not too bad.

I used sapele, which was all my local lumberyard had in the exterior category. Cedar would have been a bit cheaper if they had it, but not by much. Based on what I read here, wood availability and price seems to vary wildly by region. Bought 2, 14' 1x4 sticks and ripped down on a friends table saw.
