Man Cave

I am thinking about building a shelter of some kind on a rear deck I have in my back yard. I need something to protect from the sun & rain in summer and the rain snow and bitter wind in winter. I have been browsing the Weber Family Portraits and haven't seen much in the way of man caves. I also want to enclose the back, two ends and partial on each end of the front. I want to store all my grilling needs like charcoal utensils etc. More important is the need to be able to secure all this from theft. Some type of closure when not in use. Any pic's or suggestions are welcome. Below are some pic's of the deck and a pic of a man cave that I like the style of only bigger. 4' x 10' I would close in the back and both ends and maybe 2' on each side of the 10' width. So the design would have to change from the pic but this is the basic style I want.

When designing, it sounds like you might want to have storage cupboards built in. Consider something like this . You'd have to make sure you leave room for it but I use something similar to it. Snow proof and rain proof.

I did not have all you are looking for, but when I put an addition on my house, I included a covered porch. It was closed on two sides and covered. I loved it. A couple of the things I liked were:

- The two walls blocked the prevailing wind which allowed me to smoke (wsm) in relative calm no matter the weather.
- I could access the porch from a sliding door off our four season room. This allowed me to grill in the coldest of winter by being able to be very close to the grill and move from inside to outside and back very easily.
- The roof was high enough and the area large enough that I could (and did) grill during a major storm.

I didn't store anything outside, but I could see a heavy duty box bolted down and locked as being a good deterrent.

Best of luck in your build. I moved to a new house and all I have now is a area where there's a couple foot roof overhang. I miss my porch. I know you'll like your man cave (though I would call it a fort, not being in the basement).

Thanks Bob. She actually cost more per mo. than a security system. LOL She has a sensitive tummy so the vet has her on a lifetime diet of chicken breast,rice and Science Diet food = $25 per week. She is worth every penny.

Actually Len I'm looking at building my own cabinets (another of my expensive hobbies) similar to this out of cedar. Also a rolling cart on casters that would roll out when in use and roll back into place as part of the cabinetry.

Yes, but I think he was looking for a better solution for wind/weather protection this year, not sure if he came up with one.

Thanks Jim. Those are great photos. I don't build from plans pictures are good enough. Mine will be on one of my decks so it will be about 4' deep and 10' long. I don't thing movable shutters will do much to help in the winter. I was thing more like a wall about 36" h with a serving shelf then double track sliding door hardware from there to the eves. The sliding track allows you to slide to one side or lift out completely. You could even cut an opening for an acrylic windows to allow more light in. Not exactly sure yet but I will take lots of pic's when I build it. What is your roof made from? Love the lights inside. Looks so cozy.

its heavy 30 MIL clear vinyl tarp...
stands up very well in the open country strong winter winds... practical (in cost), but the tarps do take a beating...

3/8" lexan (plexiglass) is nice, but costly
i priced it to close in the pig at over 2 grand.
