my pop MADE a charcoal chimney BEFORE they were available in stores.... REALLY...it was pre-chimney days for most of us don't ya know,
two coffee cans wired together with the tops/bottoms removed, holes drilled or punched in them with long nails about two inches from the bottom of the lower can...

Here is a picture from 1980 of my childhood bro & best friend with his wife in Steamboat Springs Colorado. In a gravel pit. Sadly he passed @ 34 yrs old. Blood clot. RIP Nate.

My dad was mean, he made me babysit the "hot iron" to get the coals going. It was a nightmare back in the 60's and 70's, charcoal didn't light like it does now. It would take about two hours to finally get the BBQ going. Talk about boring....or it could be, it was pre-chimney days for most of us don't ya know,

My neighbors had one of those charcoal starters that had a short, we would all join hands and feel the buzz going through our body's.
