Joe's Weber Genesis 1000 Restoration

Hi all. Needed a new grill and decided to restore an old one that looked like the one my Dad had back in the day. The new ones just don't do it for me. It's taken me about 3 months working on the grill for an hour or so at a time. Definitely under estimated how much time it would take, but work and dad activities take precedence. Still need to put a few finishing touches on it, but I'm very close.

Massive thanks to the generous Steve Hoch for providing me with a real nice black lid. I started with a Greenie that was in great condition with minimal frame rust, but the hood had a bad dent and severe discoloration. Replaced hardware with stainless. Durawood swapped for cedar 1x2 that I cut and applied spar urethane. Sanded and repainted everything. Cleaned and greased the valves. New flavorizer bars from rcplanebuyer. Painting it evenly was the hardest part in my opinion. Lots of little challenges to overcome, but all the info on the board was extremely helpful to problem solve. Thanks to everyone! Definitely went overboard for a grill that will soon be splattered in grease, but it was fun. Never expected to post about it so the before pictures are lacking. I'll post the final final pics within a week or so.

Joe, very nice work. I'm glad to have contributed in some small way. The wood is beautiful, can't wait to see your handle. I think I gave you a new tank scale sticker as well that will be a nice finishing touch. Yes, painting the frame and having it look decent is to me the most stressful part of the whole thing. The amount of time you spent to get where you are is tremendous, which I can arrest to from personal experience. Again, very nice work!

That’s a real beauty! Take pictures to remember her by and then let the grease fly off some good steaks. It’s a Weber and that’s what it was built for!

Very happy to hear you got great support from all of us here at TVWBB :coolkettle: .

Very nice work, Joe! Love the wood. Did you have a manifold bracket for it? It's a galvanized hanger (support) that goes from the manifold to the crossmember where the igniter is.

Thanks! No, I don't think the grill had one when I took it apart. Didn't realize it was a thing, but I can see it's purpose for adding some stability. Looks like something that's I can easily order.

Joe, I've got extra manifold brackets if you want to come by and get one or need anything else to finish the grill. Just let me know.

That wood is beautiful. I just posted a thread about my restoration. Kept my wood light but now I’m thinking I gotta do another one and go with a rich color like yours. Nice work.

Thanks! Yours looks great btw. I actually didn't stain the cedar. I just tried to find some darker pieces and put Hellsman spar on them. The spar urethane made them a little darker too.
