Jimmy Buffet

I'm a big fan myself. Probably part of the reason I moved to the Gulf Coast. Found many other great ones through my like of Jimmy. Peter Mayer, Mac Mcanally and probably even John Prine. RIP Mr Buffett, I raise one in your honor tonight.

Never liked his music but he was a genius of marketing and entrepreneurship. Margaritaville restaurants, resorts, casinos, retirement communities, campgrounds, Landshark beer, footwear...plus he had his private pilot's license...that's pretty cool.
how in the world could you NOT like his music...?
how in the world could you NOT LOVE his music...?
he was feel good, love life and have a blast doing it guy.
i've seen him at Alpine 3 times over the years and ran into him at his KW bar/restaurant in 2002.
The world has truly lost a real treasure.

Well to each their own. Loved a lot of his stuff as well. Noted in an interview once he really looked up to Gordon Lightfoot and his "Come Monday" was his attempt to write a GL song. But, then many don't like GL or other things.

This one hits me really hard. I was in my early 20s when I first heard Jimmy Buffett and later became a dedicated fan after listening to the Changes in Latitudes album in depth with a friend. That was when I began really listening to his poetry and melodies.

I spent some hours yesterday with Jimmy working on my carving and just enjoying his musical library. Jimmy Buffett has been a major influence in my life -- his songs helping me through some of my most difficult times. His philosophy has special meaning -- really listen to Cowboy In The Jungle. That song helped me weather the most severe career issues I had. RIP Jimmy Buffet -- neither life nor music will be the same without you.

Music teacher here. To me, liking/disliking any kind of pop music breaks down to three elements.

1. The easiest to agree on is commercial success/sales/popularity - Buffet obviously had that. Millions liked his music.
2. Second, is the actual quality of the music - crappy songs sometimes sell millions by repeating lyrics like "Hey baby" ad infinitum. Buffet's songs were very original and well put together musically. He invented his own category and it worked.
3. Next is everyone's personal preference - using your own personal taste. Sometimes a song that is wildly popular and even well-constructed might not be to one's liking, and that's fine. To each his own. You can go to a fancy restaurant and not like something, but please don't say its bad - its probably excellent, you just prefer something else.

1. He didn't have the best voice.
2. His song writing to me was unoriginal and simplistic.
3. He was selling something I already had and didn't need from him nor could I relate to his version of.
I grew up surfing and spending much of my life on or near the beach(NJ, Puerto Rico, San Diego, Mexico, Florida, Portugal, Hatteras) and still do to this day and my perception of such a life differs vastly from the typical "parrot heads".
But he certainly parlayed his "brand" of a certain lifestyle into a money making machine.
