There was oil in the carne asana marinade. And the onions were part of the cilantro, onion, and lime juice salsa. It's the perfect topper IMO. No need to brown.

It's pretty simple. Dice up a white onion, rough chop some cilantro leaves (I don't like stems), and fresh squeezed limes. Mix it up. Then add salt and pepper to your liking.
