Idea for Soaking Grates

How you clean your grill to any length is a personal choice. The main reason I posted the last video was because it has a nice pan that he uses, and I thought someone would like to try it. I know I bought one and have had great results.
Yeah, if it's just personal choice, I get it. I never clean mine like that and I want to make sure I'm not doing it wrong. lol

Yeah - Like I said, I just soak my smoker grates. It's the sugar in the BBQ sauce - it dries on there like concrete and it's a ***** to get off. And there's no high heat scrape option with a smoker.

My weber grates - just heat 'em up and scrape! Pretty simple.

I would clean my grates when they sat most of the winter and I was doing a spring bowl scape I would soak the grates in the sun while shaping out the bowl.
Soaking removed build up and mold, but now living in a warmer area I seldom do a soak cleaning only if I am selling one.

When you do soak your grates the junk just falls of with very little hard scrubbing, plus you have 90% of what you need in your kitchen all ready. No need for power tools, just a relaxing soak, wiIe down and rinse.

So, this is an absolute serious question. Other than cleaning the grill to sell it, why would you need your grates that clean? Is it just a preference thing?
The only time I have ever cleaned grates other than a burn off or scrape off was when selling.

Clean shiny grates make a huge improvement to catch a buyers attention. For example...

Do you clean your oven?
No .never have.
But we only use the. Oven a few times a year. It doesn't get dirty. Or at least it hasn't in 28 years. The inside is some kind of self-cleaning surface or something. Basically we use the oven to store cookie sheets and a big roasting pan. We have had 2 holiday meals at my house in 28 years.... Everything is always been at my parents or the in-laws. And until my mother-in-law finally passes that's the way it's going to be.. I think last year I cooked lasagna ... And chicken parmesan a couple of times in oven. Both of those are simply heating for 30 minutes to melt the cheese. Didn't make much of a mess. We use the heck out of a small toaster oven though.

When I redid my house, I made sure the laundry sink could hold an 18” grate flat on the bottom. It’s a stainless steel sink like used in a restaurant. Much nicer that those plastic tubs. I wanted something nicer because our laundry room is on the main floor and connected to a half bath.

I also have a galvanized tub that would work but I don’t use it for that. It does make a nice wind break though.

I’m sure it was no where near that expensive when I bought it. :)

I also have a wife which happens to be a very good cook, she keeps the symtove top sparkling, and asks me to clean the oven as she doesn't like the smell of oven cleaners, and the self cleaning part takes to long and wastes electricity.
She loves BBQ and helps me clean grates when I am doing several at the same time.
Maybe we are just nuts about cleaning, house, cars , etc.
But it makes us feel better, when friends come over for dinner.

Just submerged two(2) very greasy/dirty 22” SNS Easy Spin Grates” with some “Joy” Dishwasher Detergent and some baking soda. Of note, even covers the handles! Will leave it alone until tomorrow morning and will post the results.

Not sure what they looked like going in, but I like to scrub them after a couple hours. With grease, soaking doesn’t fully penetrate.

Picked-up “ Barkeepers Friend” today for possible use tomorrow if-need-be. Oh, my first-time doing it this way so call -it a BBQ Experiment:rolleyes:

I just posted photos of the two(2) greasy/dirty grills that are presently soaking from a grilling session last Sunday and the one most dirty from another distant cook.

How about posting a photo of a very dirty/greasy grill that required your cleaning attention?.

Thanx for your comment.

No pictures going in. Plus, they’re not that bad because I only clean my smoker grates. But, even with those, it works best (for me) to hit them with the Scotch Brite green pad after they’ve soaked for an hour or so. Then, a longer soak and finish with more of the green scrub pad. Mine look pretty good, but if they took something like Barkeepers, I’d probably skip that step. Good luck with your experiment.
