Yep, and I'll bet the airflow would have at slowed down the rust on the side and back panels. An even crazier thought would have been to use stainless steel for those panels since that's what they used for the doors.
Actually on the 1st generation Summit - but NOT on the Platinum of that era that used a similar frame - in addition to the doors, the side and back cabinet pieces are all heavy 304 stainless. Before the Vieluxe was created, these were Weber’s pinnacle grills.

The pic of the lid and control panel make me wonder if there’s fade or if it’s just that dirty. I see all the signs of not spending much time directly in the sun. Condiment basket is a plus.

That’s fade. It almost looks like a mica type finish on the porcelain. I believe it was a result of the manufacturing process where something got into the porcelain mix.

I restored one earlier in the summer and you can see the sparkling lid and me in the reflection

The person who took the grill was a Chicago native and a White Sox fan now living in New England.

The sparkling control panel was too much so I swapped it with a non-sparkling one
